Yale GEPN 2017

Published

Hi everyone! Now that applications are starting to open for this cycle I thought I would start a thread. Is there anyone else that is starting the Yale GEPN application? If so, are you as overwhelmed as I am? Also, if there are any current GEPN students that see this thread, feel free to share any tips or your current experiences :) Thank you!

Should we make a new fb group or change the name of the existing one? If so someone let me back in pls haha I left because I didn't see the point of being in it unless I was actually going - and I'm in for WH/CNM!

Hey everyone! Decisions are out early! I was waitlisted for PNP. Does anyone know when deposits are due?

What was the previous group called? It would be great to get a new FB group started!

Email from admissions from a while ago says they will make one for us and let us know

Aquamarine Healing, I see that you are in the UMass GEP forum as well. Were you also accepted to Yale? If so, how are you handling the decision process? I got into both and am weighing the decision.

Hi Falco421,

I am weighing the same decision as you are. I have been accepted to both UMASS GEP and Yale GEPN for the family nurse practitioner specialty. Both programs are my top two choices, how are you approaching the decision? I would love to email if that is easier? Both programs are strong, so it would be helpful to hear from someone who is in the same position.

Hi BrickBradford,

My name is Heather and I'm currently facing a tough decision between Yale GEPN vs. UMASS GEP for the family nurse practitioner track in each. How did you go about making your admissions decision? What factors were most important to you in your decision? Any input you have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for posting on this forum.

Email me. I'll talk to either or both of you on the phone. I was in the same boat last year

Hi everybody! Congratulations to all that have been accepted, how exciting! I'm joining this thread as a Yale GEPN CNM hopeful.

Would anybody who has been admitted be willing to share what experiences you listed on your application. I know gpa and gre scores can only help you so much. Just wondering what sort of extracurriculars that have helped put people over the edge i.e. travel, volunteering, work etc. Any recommendations on what I can be doing now to increases chances when I apply.

Thank you all in advance, and good luck wherever you chose to attend!

Hi Doula91!

I found this so helpful when I was applying so I hope that I can help you!

I was accepted to Yale's GEPN as a CNM and to OHSU's for CNM and have decided to go to OHSU (although it was a really tough choice for me!).

I had a pretty extensive extracurricular page (as I'm sure most people applying to the programs do). I worked at a birth center for 9 months as a student midwife, I was a doula (who focused on low income families) for 3 years I think, I reworked/recreated the curriculum for a birthing class which I taught, I co-taught another class, and I worked as a warmline phone opperator for a non-profit that serves women experiencing perinatal mood disorders. I also dispatch wild land fire crews and worked as a wildland firefighter and remote wildland surveyor. I think that all the birth experience really demonstrated my commitment to the field and my passion for the work and my experience in wildfire made me unique and proved that I could handle a physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding career. I also added some volunteer work I did a while a go at a day center for families experiencing homelessness and at a recreation center for adults with disabilities.

I think that the essay was crucial and I spent a TON of time making sure that it represented me accurately and communicated why I was going into the field. I had a bunch of friends who know me really well (including my mom) edit and discuss it with me so that I could really pull out the most important parts and make sure that I was being true to myself and my passion.

My strategy for applying was to really let my unique experience and passion for the work show and have faith that if I did that, the program that would be the best fit would accept me. Which funny enough, worked. I was accepted to my top 2 choices and waitlisted/rejected at my safety schools! haha! The universe has a way of steering you in the right direction. This also applies to the interview if you get one.

Really really at the end of the day be true to yourself and your story.

Good luck! I hope this helps!

Hi,

I hope your application process was successful. I am hoping to apply for fall 2018. Would it be possible for you to share what the essay questions were so I can begin working on the personal statement. Thank you!
