I would not recommend walking to the YSN.

The YSN is located South of the Yale Medical Ctr in a sometimes rough neighborhood. Even students on the posh main campus experience crime. YSN's specific location never made me uncomfortable (keep in mind I work in Trenton and Newark), but walking North, South, East, or West of it looked a little dicey.

There are several places you can stay near the MAIN campus. From the main campus you might be able to take a University shuttle to YSN (check the schedule and call to confirm). Keep in mind that YSN is a long walk (last time I tried it the weather was in the teens...) from the Med campus and the Medical Center.

Here's another FYI... I just called the Marriott and they gave me the 69$ rate for two nights, the 18th and 19th, with transportation to and from the interview. So either the lady I spoke with messed up and gave me the discount, or the 69$ rate still stands!

And yes I'll be arriving to New Haven on the 18th around 5:30 pm. I'm going to try to make it to the pot luck but I may not have time. Are you going to the pot luck that night? We should meet up sometime after that and get coffee or explore the town or something. Anything to calm the nerves!!!

Thanks for the info. I am going to call them tomorrow to book the room. I am planning on going to the pot luck on Thursday evening. We should definately get together afterwards... I am going to be a big ball of nerves and will definately need something to keep my mind off the craziness.

Hi Everyone!

I really need some advice/help. Are there any current students at Yale in the GEPN program? I have to make a decision by the end of this week. I was offered an interview at Yale and really want to go, but I am wondering how many students (about) are accepted into the program compared to how many are offered interviews...? I have been accepted into another program that literally begins next week but obviously I'd rather go to Yale. So if someone could provide with some additionally info about the interview process and how many students are actually admitted to the program it may help me make a decision. Thank you so much!

you have a tough decision to make! You have been accepted at a top 10 nursing school-- UIC-- and that is nothing to sneeeze at. But I also understand the allure of applying to/attending an Ivy league school.

I will be attending the UIC program and I'm so excited. I also wanted to attend JHU, Yale or Columbia. But for me it came down to finances. The in-state tutition and the caliber/recognition of the program as good enough for me. Plus I love chicago and knew that even if I did relocate I would def. want to come back.

But what is good enough for you? if you don't give this Yale opportunity a try will you regret it for the rest of your life? Are you interested in pursuing an PhD or DNP, if so you could apply to Yale for future studies? If you decline UIC and don't get in to Yale either, are you prepared to handle waiting another application cycle before attending schoool?

Even though current yale students or others who have interviewed may give you their experience that should not be used as a litmus test for your decision. Interviews are so subjective and sometimes depend on whether you or your interviewer are having a good or bad day! I had the worst cramps of my life on one of my interview days so I know that I didn't shine like I could have sans the cramps ;o(

If you haven't already, make a pro and con list. If that doesn't help, give each pro and con a number (1-10) and tally up the scores. For example if a pro for Yale is "the ivy league education" and you really want that name you could give it a "9". if a con for yale is "location" you could give that a (-2). Total for yale, in my example, 7. Do the same for UIC and see how you feel about that picture.

Make the best decision you can and then go wholeheartedly in that direction. Don't attend UIC but all the while wishing you were at Yale. There are students on the waiting list at UIC dying to get in.

I got an interview for yale as well--january 18th. Congrats to all! I'm so excited...and nervous. I tried booking a room at the Marriott but the $69 rooms are all booked so I got a room at the New Haven Hotel. I was wondering if anyone wanted to split a room with me (it's $85/night) or if I can split a Marriott room with someone else. It'll be cheaper for all and we can even exchange info if this seems too sketchy. I'm arriving Thursday night and only staying that one night. If anyone is interested, please let me know!

Also, does anybody know how to get from Bradley International Airport to YSN? Is a taxi the only way? It's a bit on the expensive side. Thanks!

Hi ec,

Bradley Airport is an hour+ from New Haven and there's no direct public transportation between them. Welcome to the 'burbs!

The simpler, more expensive option is to reserve a car: https://www.ctlimo.com/index.cfm?pg=res&res=resprice1from&destendid=3

The cheaper, more complicated option is to take a bus from Bradley to Hartford: http://www.cttransit.com/content/pdfs/h_BDL_wkdysched.pdf ,

then walk from the Old State House to Union Station (10 min. through a fine downtown area) and take the bus to New Haven http://www.cttransit.com/content/pdfs/nh_dattco_42x.pdf. There is also an Amtrak train from Hartford to New Haven from Union Station ($10-15).

Don't just hop in a cab-- it will be super expensive!

Swimkat: I think miss print's post is excellent! Don't be swayed only by the name! There are *so* many other issues to consider...what's your specialty (ie Midwifery, family health, oncology?) COST is a very, very important consideration! I was strongly considering UIC at one time because the program looks very solid, but their out-of-state tuition costs were close to Yale's tuition cost, so the decision wasn't difficult for me after I learned that, but if you're in-state that makes a HUGE difference!

I second LP's comment about Miss Print's post. Not only is it a very well communicated perspective, but also I really appreciate your approach to the cost-benefit ratio tally. Excellent idea. In fact, I'm deciding whether or not to pursue APN schooling (direct-entry) vs. medical school and I will put your pro/con method to use. I feel passionate about health promotion (I have a Master's in it) and preventive medicine, and am the type of person who wants to know everything I possibly can about maintaining health and learning about disease/pathology (so I can know how to prevent it!). Consequently, I'm at a crossroads. I haven't applied to either route, and want to keep my options open, but I want to enter a profession I am enthusastic about and excited to spend my days with. Just my $.02. Miss Print and LP, your comments have been excellent throughout these posts! Thank you!

Hello everybody! Congrats to everyone on getting an interview with Yale!

I have a question about the dress code during interviews. I've had several phone interviews, but I haven't had the chance to do a personal interview yet. Would a full pants-suit be too dressy? Would a blouse & nice pants be appropriate? I'd love your input on this. Thanks!!
