Would you stay?

Even though there isn't a true nursing "shortage" most places, there are still many opportunities, at least in my area. I actually am in the process of leaving an APN role that I've only had just under a year. Basically I desire a better work/family balance and would prefer to step away from direct patient care, so am pursuing management and/or teaching. Until 3 years ago, I had worked in the same nursing position for more than 10 years. The idea of leaving my comfort zone was scary! I knew everyone. I knew the policies and the politics. It was very comfortable! But, when I finally decided to take the leap and leave, I found that there were lots of great places to work. Places that did some things better than my old place, and places that did things worse. Wonderful nurses and not so wonderful nurses. I am so glad I chose to get out and get some new experiences in new facilities and in some new areas of nursing. It increased my confidence and broadened my horizons. :)

And, because of those experiences, I now have the courage to say no to a position that doesn't fit me and instead seek out a better "fit" for myself and my family. I don't think I would have had this courage 5 years ago...
