Sorry, meant to say private not provate! (don't know how to edit the title)

Would you rather work for a public or private hospital? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

Thanks!

Probably A public hospital in my initial phase of my career. The reason is you learn more because the action is fast and furious.

I'd rather work for a private not-for-profit but my hospital is for profit so it is what it is. They just decided in the next few weeks they want to cut an ungodly amount of nursing hours to save money, rather than keeping rooms staffed to take in more patients to earn more money. Also, I am ineligible for the HRSA grants because of the for profit status. In principle I believe that health care should not be for profit.

But the market for new graduate nurses is tough and this hospital gave me a job on the unit I really wanted and I love the people I work with. I think we do provide great care to our patients, many of whom are of lower socioeconomic status. I think we serve our community well.

I would MUCH rather work public - but then things are different here

I'd love to work public, but at my age and given the lack of opportunities for white nurses at my level of seniority in the public sector, it's not an option for me. Truly, I'm sick of the relentless pursuit of profit that characterizes private health care.
