Would you quit a job to make 10 dollars less an hour

Published

Hi

I need some advice. I work 8 hrs a day doing private duty. I was offered a job with benefits, but the pay is 10 bucks less. Would you take it?

Thanks for your input!

Decisions decisions! Imo if it was about couple of dollars i would have gone for rehad, but $10 cut is too much. I understand your situation because i want to get out of Pdn too. Although i love my pt., i am bored out of my mind. My suggestion, keep looking, smthing better will come up sooner or later. Experince wise rehab wud b better than home care, but taking $2000 cut/per mnth is bit too much my friend :)

I would not do it. You can get a part time job on the weekend to learn things. Or you can rearrange your hh hours to accommodate the other job and work two jobs like most of my colleagues in LTC did back when. After a certain amount of time doing this, you will have learned a lot and made a lot of money too. Paid for your new house, your new car, your higher education, toys for your hubby. All the things my buddies used to be able to get with all the work hours they were racking up with two jobs. But don't trade one for the other.

This is definitely a hard decision but it depends on you and your situation. Can you afford to lose that extra money?

Personally, I've left a job for another with less money. Money is good but it is not everything; the more you make, the more you want and kicks you into another income bracket.

I've also done private duty and like you, I was bored and looked forward to the end of my shift. To help in your decision making, write down the pro & con for each job on a piece of paper and seek input from your loved ones.

Good luck!

Don't think that because you are bored that you aren't learning something. You learn alot about dealing w/people and being an advocate for a handicapped child, esp. when they are in very dysfunctional homes.

You really have to assess your situation and what you need most for this season of your life. Are you intending to get back into acute care? If so, then private duty isn't the place for you.

I chose my different positions according to what worked w/my life situation at the time. In my BC years (before children) I worked 5 yrs in the hospital I trained at in Critical care settings and I gained a lot of clinical skills along the way. But then came the AC years (after children) When my children were young, I chose private duty for it's flexibility. I could work my job around my life and my kids needs instead of the other way around. The money was less than I was making in a hospital...but I was home for holidays, I went to all my kids field trips, and I went to all of their sporting events, They hardly knew I worked.

Now that I have an empty nest, I've moved into a management position with much better pay. Because of the stress and lack of flexibility I now have, I would never have accepted this job when my kids were home no matter how much more it paid. I do know that I would not have gotten this job without my many years of home care experience. The skills I learned from being in homes has given me a unique understanding of home care and an empathy for the nurse, family, and patient that I would never have otherwise. There isn't much that happens that I haven't already experienced and I am constantly amazed at how those 'boring' years have given me such valuable insight now.

I personally would not take that big of a cut in pay. I would instead find the best job for the season of life you are in.

I should have said instead: I personally would not take that big of a cut in pay unless it is the perfect job for the season of life you are in. Do what is best for you right now.

Wow! I did not know there are places who pay less than private duty nursing. I work for a pdn company and the pay is extremly low. I have been trying to get out now for almost a year but no one else is hiring. I am also bored to death on one case which consumes almost all my hours. I have learned absolutley nothing during this one case.
