Would 80-90 points on the nursing application be enough?

I live in California and will be applying next year to 5-6 nursing programs. I have averaged that my overall points on their "point system" would be somewhere around 80-95 points.

I am a 4.0 GPA student with 200+ hrs of health care volunteer experience. I will be taking the TEAS this summer, and am confident that I will at least get a B.

However, I am a little worried that this may not be enough points. From your experience or from what you have heard, do I stand a good chance of getting in to at least one school?

    I'm sorry but that's not enough. Your gpa just won't cut it and most schools generally want 2500 hours of volunteer work. But don't give up, keep trying. You should retake those classes you got an A in and try to get an A+. Best of luck

    Which schools are you applying to specifically? I am also in the process of applying. I have researched most of the ones in Nor Cal. When I spoke with them they all pretty much stressed that its extremely competitive and they receive hundreds of applications, and a high number of them are near 4.0 GPAs with lots of volunteer experience. And in addition to these things, many applicants speak multiple languages, and/or have medical field work experience. The advisor at USF pretty much looked me in the eye and said I should learn to read and write a 2nd language. I did some volunteer work at Kaiser but not as many hours as you. And my GPA was not a 4.0 like yours. So you are probably in better shape than me.

    I live in Louisiana & I applied to a nursing program here & they won't even take in consideration that I've been an LPN for 7 years! They focus only on your GPA, Hesi scores, & # of pre reqs taken at their school!! I truly find that odd!!!!!!!

    It all depends on your program and how they calculate the points. Each program is different. I would suggest you contact the academic advisor for the nursing program and meet with him/her to determine what the previous point cut-off was. You'll know you need more than that amount for the next application cycle.

    The program I've applied to has a points system that's based on the following: District Residency, GPA, Co-req completion, Paid direct health care experience, volunteer hours, completion of either CNA, Phlebotomy Technician or EMT-Basic. For this program, if you haven't completed all co-reqs, you'd miss out on 46 points (which is a LOT!). A high GPA gives you more points, but you can't get in on GPA alone. While you don't need paid HCE hours, it certainly gives you more points. Same with volunteer work.

    So, your best course of action is to meet with the advisor and see where you stand as far as points. They'll let you know if your application would be competitive enough to have a chance to get in. If it isn't, they can help point you in the right direction to make it competitive for the next application cycle.
