Would you let your kid ride a MOTORCYCLE ???

Published

HI,

im wondering if you would let your kid get a motorcycle if they wanted.

my grandfather was a physician and would not let my mother or her sisters ride motorcycles.

so Im wondering if this had to do with the number of motorcycle related deaths/carnage he had seen. Do you see many motorcycle related accident victims?

thanks

Bikes are a personal choice for adults. I don't think kids have "rights" in this area. When I worked pediatrics, everyone hated the time of year when the Harley ride in took place. Our ortho unit filled with fractured femurs of kids who were riding along. When I worked brain injury, motorcyclists were our #1 customers. Of course no helmet law here....

Plan on getting my 6yo a dirt bike in a few years - my husband is planning on getting a new bike too, so they can both ride Motocross (just for fun - not racing). I'm not at all interested in on-road bikes, but would probably let my kids try them out when they get quite a bit older - depending on their maturity level as well.

Absolutely not.

Would I let my child ride? Several years ago I would have shouted NO NO NO!!--I was just down on motorcyclists for no real good reason other than they got in my way when I was driving.

HOWEVER I changed my tune several years ago. My husband and I both ride motorcycles and have for years.(I'm on my 5th bike in as many yrs.:) ) We started riding after losing the apple of our eye (our first granddaughter at age 3 yrs) to a bacterial disease:crying2: and thought to ourselves: "life is too short--we need to enjoy life while we can until we see her again". We met some great people with the Christian Motorcyclists Assn.--my husband accepted the Lord--lots of good has come from our involvement with bikes!!!! We've given our daughters(twins) rides--they are 24 years old--with kids of their own now--we went through a motorcycle safety course and I highly recommend doing that...and would tell my daughters that if they ever wanted to get a bike to first go through the training. I believe that most accidents are due to the drivers of cars out there not being aware of the bikers. I also believe that when it's your time to die you will--regardless of what you do--and have told my husband: "If I die while riding, please know I was doing what I loved most!" He feels the same.

I have NOT seen motorcycle accident victims--maybe it would change my mind--I don't know--

My husband got a Harley Davidson touring bike, one of those big ones with the passenger seat on the back, for Christmas. I had never been on a motorcycle and didn't want to get on it initially. Once I did, it was SO much fun.

Less than 5 months later, an accident happened. I had a serious injury, (not to my head, thank goodness) and spent the spring and summer in rehab.

I will not get on a motorcycle again.

I only have one body and it has to last me the rest of my life.

It's not just death to think about, it's being disabled and having to spend the rest of your life in that condition.

It may very well be that cars cause most of the accidents, but motorcycles are very dangerous.

I am not addressing the original question here about children, but this has been my experience.

Yes, I would! I have been riding my own for 3 years. I love it. Is it dangerous? Yes, but I feel lots of other things r also. Its just a choice. You do or you dont. Just like helmet laws (which I dont want to go there) it should be a choice.

Bottom line...the motorcycle always loses...of course.

I would say no--but my X-hubby has a Harley. My kids are 11y/8y

It is a scary place out on the road...

NO WAY!

I met my husband as as result from a motorcycle injury, and am thankful for that, and thankful he can walk because of it. I have seen WAY too many accidents, and will not let my kids ride. If they are of age, and can make the decision for themselves, I will then present them with all the information, and them I guess they will form their own opinion. I won't judge them, I can only try to steer them in the thinkings of an adult with experiences beyond theirs. :)

I ride, I've come off once, but here in Australia all riders wear helmets by law and do a safety course to both get a learner licence and a provisional licence, so our riders are mostly ok. The car drivers are another matter, and the idiots. I shudder when I see someone wearing a helmet, T-shirt and shorts, and have been told of such coming into emergency with skin left only where the clothes were...

I always wear full leathers or kevlar pants, heavy boots and gloves. I also have a back guard for long trips, as I've nursed a quadriplegic sufferer before (MVA). I'd let my kids ride, when they get old enough, but ensure that they wear the proper safety gear, and learn properly, and hope they are ok....

What else can you do? I can't/won't forbid them, and riding is fun!

Have Fun!

I will let my children ride a motorcycle, but they have to share with me!!!

My father gave me his 1957 Vespa scooter, and its fun!! Its about to get a new snazzy pink paint job. I remember as a child, he would tie a wagon or a toboggen behind it and give all of us kids rides around the neighborhood. What fun! We all loved the rides we would get, no one ever got hurt, although sometimes we would fall off, and we would all laugh and get back on.

When he gave us rides on the back of the scooter, he had an old WW2 metal flack helmet that he would have us kids wear.

Yes.. but Hubby and I both ride. If it were my child...they would have to be really responsible and wear a helmet and of course take a motorcycle safety class. Have had a few friends killed or mangled in motorcycle wrecks. I've had to start riding regularly to school because there is no parking if you have a class after 8:00 in the morning.

My Kids like to ride minibikes (I have one myself) but they know they must have helmets and pads. We all ride together on dirt trials and it is a family activity. Would I let my kids ride one of the Missle - jet - things they call street bikes - NO. To many things on the road that can hurt you and have seen my fair share of this.

Thanks to all & God Bless - Gary
