Would you add your professor or instructor as a friend on social media after you graduate and why? Is there a benefit?

I think it depends on how close you were with them. I am now on a first name basis with a few of them, and we are friends on FB. I don't know if there's a benefit - maybe connections?

Letters of rec benefit. I reached out to one to write me a LOR years later. Just don't post anything dumb.

From the other side- I enjoy when my grads connect on social media. After all, once they graduate we are colleagues. I don't necessarily 'follow' all of them, but it is a nice way to keep in touch. And sometimes that connection is mutually beneficial.
I feel the same, they are then peers and colleagues, but I have noticed other faculty posting inappropriate things.

I think it's appropriate if both sides have professional and "bland" pages. I wouldn't add an instructor or boss to a page that had an abundance of personal information on it ...or even worse, an abundance of controversial personal opinions.
