Worst case scenario needle stick

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Yep

After reading about other people panicking on allnurses about the cursed needle stick....I can finally join the club.

Unfortunately.

These are the facts:

1. drawing labs with a butterfly, and about to retract

2. Patient moved unexpectedly and rapidly

3. needle pierced my hand

4. I was wearing gloves

5. I bled a lot under my gloves, indicating a deeper stick

6. Patient was a confirmed HIV+ with fairly high viral load according to last labs

7. Patient was already confirmed Hep C+

8. I started antiviral HIV meds within an hour and a half after incident

9. There are no prophylaxis meds for hep C

10. The labs were redrawn anyways on the patient (but not holding hope for a previous mistake)

10. I already know the statistics, as I was counseled heavily at work

My question is, how do I sleep at night, I am so so so upset, the kind of upset that makes you want to "turn back to 5" and crawl into your mom's lap and cry

Any support welcome

Thank you for continuing to update on this thread. Your willingness to share your struggles with us is really brave, and it feels wonderful to celebrate the triumphs with you!

Hi Laughing RN,

I just read your story and ordeal, I can't imagine how stressful this whole experience has been and continues to be for you. I just learned that one of my close aunts who has been a long time nurse was stuck by a needle from a child who had Hep, which she subsequently acquired.

I am glad to hear that your results are coming back with good news.

Its really a sad commentary on the nursing profession that nurses have to contend with these hazards, especially given the selfless nature of nursing and the impact that nurses have on the well being of others.

I wish you the best in your journey.

Kindly,

I will follow this thread through to the final resolution.

1 Year check-in

2 days ago, I had a co-worker draw my final 3 "serum separator tubes" O' blood.

Test results:

Negative, Negative, Negative.

It's very hard for me to look back to the beginning of this thread and read my own words and emotions when this happened.

I know a lot of people get stuck with needles, but (despite searching this forum a gazillion times) I have found no one that has stuck themselves with a large bore needle with confirmed contaminated HIV and Hep C blood.

I have always known from the start, what the viral load was for the patient's HIV at the time of the "stick"...for those curious, it was in the hundreds of thousands. Basically, very high.

I have been looking forward to writing this post for at least 6 months now. I imagined some poetic style post, that detailed my travesty with the dirty needle stick, yet...

I have nothing,

Except for my story already posted over the last year.

I hope all future needle sticks read this.

The statistics from CDC from a hollow bore stick are:

0.3% risk for HIV

1.87% for hep C

I remind myself everyday

Thanks Everyone at Allnurses that offered support.

LaughingRN

I am happy for you.

I am so glad this worked out in your favor! My heart sank reading this! My husband (a police officer) was stuck by a needle he didnt' know what in a suspects pocket. Immediately ditched the suspect while another car took him to the hospital. The suspect was confirmed Hep C...our stomachs were in our feet during the testing while we waited to hear about the HIV status. Suspect was negative HIV...so it was waiting for the Hep C...he came out clean (hubby) but it was a sickening experience. Hubby wanted to beat the guy for (a) not telling him he had a needle in his pocket and (b) acting like it was no big deal. I am so sorry you had to go through this ordeal.

reading this makes me feel slightly relieved. i am a new grad rn in the er, almost done orienting. yesterday i was using a butterfly needle to obtain blood cultures on a pneumonia pt. as i was engaging the safety device with it slipped and stuck me on my index finger through my glove. it was definitely bleeding underneath. the family saw me do it and said "you have nothing to worry about". I followed protocol with employee health and 3 minutes before i was going home i was notified that she had hep c antibodies : ( I totally freaked out and still don't know how to process this information yet. i struggled how i was going to tell my husband and thought about our plans of having children next year...I'm glad things worked out in your favor
