Worried Student!

The names tommy am a student out of SC and im trying to get in to the program here and i worried that with my my record I will not get in.

When I was a kid I got in to a lot of trouble and I got two assult and battery chrages for basically defending myself (a simple bar brawl that some one else had started). And a few other little gooffy things but nothing bad just dumb kid stuff! but im 21 now and Im wondering will they let me in next semester and how much do they look into your recoderds?

I guess it depends on the charges so I would contact the school where you are applying and ask. Don't give them your name is you don't want to. If you are worried about nursing itself contact your states BON and they should be able to tell you. Good luck to you.

Oh, just wanted to add....

Somethings that happen when you are a minor, may not be able to be looked at in an adult file. So, it may not even show up. Now, if it was the day before you turned 21, that may be different! :chuckle

Maybe call your local police department & ask about the law there.

I think that your best bet is to write a letter to your state's board of nursing telling them your situation and asking for a decision. Better to know before taking all the nursing classes and the state board. I doubt that the state board will give you a generalized answer over the phone. They will want specific information from you and permission to check your past (confidentiality, you know). I would not assume that because your convictions were when you were a juvenile that a state agency will ignore this. They are, after all, a government agency and because of the nature of their work may have been given legal permission to consider those records.

Just my own thoughts here, now, but assault and battery on someone's record doesn't distinguish as to who started it. The fact is that you were involved in physical battery and that sends up red flags. First question that came to my mind when I read your post was how will you be able to handle a confused patient calling you every nasty name in the book and even taking a swing at you?

It wasn't any thing like that! My brother asked me to come pick him up at a bar in town when I was sixteen him and his frindes had drunk too much. When I got there a couple of older collage students were trying to pick a fight with my bro and his frindes, some one through a pounch and it started the whole bar. As far a dealing with frantic or angery poeple, Ive been a bartender since I turned 21 and been out side manger of the same rest. since I ws 18. every one says im a good person and I would rather help some one then hit them any day. But I also work as a bouncer and understand when situation is dangerous and I'll defend myself or others that are in danger if i have to. I guess Im still young. Nursing is what I want to do and if they won't let me in bc of some bull like that, I'll go some where else.
