Worried about getting accepted with Petty theft charge

Published

Hello, I’m new to this forum and just have one simple question. I know there’s a few threads on here that talk about my question but I just want to vocally describe my situation. So In 2017, I had got a petty theft charge for $25 iPhone case at Walmart. Long story short, i did pre-trial diversion, and the case got dismissed (Nolle Proseq). That time, I was a sophomore in college, and now, I just finished all my pre-reqs for nursing and now it is time for Program shopping. I am a straight A student and my GPA Is a 4.0. I don’t want to apply to a nursing program at a University because I feel like they will discriminate against me because of my petty theft charge even though it was dismissed. So right now I’m just considering a technical nursing school instead such as Sheridan tech, Atlantic , Cambridge , Chamberlin , or Concorde. Any tips on if I’m going through the right path, and is my dismissed Petty theft charge going to stop me from getting accepted to the Nursing program? Anybody have similar stories, or know people who have dealt with this? PS: I live in the Miami region.

I had a misdemeanor theft charge from when I was 18. I also did a pretrial diversion program and the record was dismissed. I am at Chamberlain College currently so you definitely can get into there ( I didn’t disclose that I was arrested because my case was dismissed but the arrest did pop up on my fingerprint background check). With the GPA you have, I would suggest you apply to a university. And apply to Chamberlin or some school like it as a backup. Good luck with your decision!

Did they say anything about it popping up on your fingerprints? I’m kinda going through the same thing. Last year I was giving a friend a ride to work and we got pulled over and there was weed in the car we were both arrested but the case ended up being dismissed but it showed up on my FBI fingerprints for Chamberlain. What do you think my chances are of still getting in? I’m so worried.

Hey. I was accepted and start nursing school in the fall. Once completing my fingerprints they were flagged because I was arrested so they had to be reviewed. Since the charged was dismissed overall they approved the fingerprints. I was just like you worried out of my mind but it worked out. Good luck with everything!
