Working PRN and buying your own insurance?

Just wondering if anyone has ever worked prn and bought their own insurance giving them more flexablity in where and when they work?

I did this for a while, a few years ago. I had quit a horrible job and wanted to take some time off from full time work. I worked per diem for a hospital clinic & a HH agency, and bought a health insurance policy for myself through Anthem, for about $90/mo. It covered ER/catastrophic, PCP visits & my birth control. I also bought a $25/mo Aflac policy that reimbursed me for preventative stuff like Pap smears, cancer screenings & immunizations. For that stuff I used a community clinic that had decent fees-for-service and paid cash. I was just fine for that 6 months, no problems, and I left the IRS out of it.

If you mean health insurance, yes, years ago. I shopped around, found a policy w/a high deductible and it worked well for me. I am healthy, take no medications so the high deductible kept the monthly cost low. I deducted the monthly premiums from my taxes. Did this for about a yr until my spouses insurance kicked in at his new job.

If you mean liability nursing insurance, I have never carried this unless I was required to for a job which has been rare.

If she was asking about I would definitely recommend nurses have their own policy and not just rely on the employer's coverage. It is not expensive and it is a tax deductible expense.

Agree.

But this topic was exhaustively discussed / debated several years ago. Recommend anyone interested to do a site search and read away to their heart's content. :)
