Does anyone have any leads on some good medical mission organizations with which nurses can volunteer their services. This whole tragedy in Haiti, as well as other recent disasters, has piqued an interest in using my new nursing skills to volunteer with medical missions at some point in the future.
I've done a search online and have only come up with faith-based medical missions. For various reasons I'd prefer to work with secular organizations. Anyone have any leads on secular medical mission oganizations?

I can't say with 100% certainty that this organization is secular, but it appears that way. Check it out:

Our hospital has sent a couple of groups to haiti in the past. They just got together, some nurses, a phy, a dentist, and they also joined with a group that does construction. (cement work, sidewalks, etc.) the hospital donated some supplies, everyone had fund raisers. The nurses, Dr and Dentist went and did their thing, and the contractors worked on irrigation stuff, rebuilding etc.
See if anyone else in your community is going, or doing somthing. You could do a local thing and make a big impact.

Check with your state's BON. Your state may have a volunteer reserve pool.

Doctors Without Borders also recruits nurses, despite the misleading name. According to their website they "operate independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. "

Hello: I have thought of doing this myself.... Not possible for me at this time though. But, maybe one day. I wonder if this is the same mercycorps that is the huge ship that travels around.... If so I tried about 3 times about a year ago... With no response. They were at that time looking for OR nurses.. Good luck to you......:redpinkhe

Just came off Mercyships last year. They are not the same as Mercycorps. Mercyships has been desperate for theatre (OR) nurses...and was paying airfares and some of the crew expenses last year. They take nurses for 2 weeks to 2 years. It is a great opportunity because you will be doing exactly what you are trained to do and you will see what a difference your time makes. It is a Christian organization, but there are some non-Christians on board. YOu are not foced to partake in Christian activities, but are asked to adhere to certain behavior (tolerance, dress, ETOH, etc)
