Working/Living in and around Madison

Published

I have some questions for those of you who live in and around Madison. My husband and I would like to relocate to the area with our 3 small children. Can anyone give me some insight to the hospitals in the area? We would ideally like to live in one of the smaller communities around Madison. Do any of the smaller hospitals in the area have Labor/Delivery departments (that's where I want to work). Any clue how big the L&D departments are in the bigger hospitals? Any recommendations for for which suburbs are family friendly? Thanks!

St. Mary's and Meriter have the L&D units in Madison. Both are pretty decent sizes, do not remember the exact numbers. Not to put a damper on your hopes...but nursing in the Madison area is pretty well frozen over! Even the few smaller hospitals like Soughton are not hiring. Just do not have any needs, and it is who you know in the Madison area. The hospitals up to a few years ago had a ton of openings...and now have had hiring freezes for quite sometime. And it is not just in Madison, it is state wide!

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it! The job market is tough all over, that's for sure!

Not sure where you live currently but Froedert in Milwaukee IS hiring RN's. I'm sure there are tons of applications but they are hiring!!

Do you work at Froedert? If so, I should get to know you! Yes, Froedert puts openings on their website, but unless you know someone who works there, they never will look at your resume! For the past 2 years I have put my name in for ICU/ER jobs...but never get a phone call....even though the postings are on there for months and I have 10 years experience!!

What? Thats such a bummer! 10 years of experience, I would for sure call you ASAP. No, unfortunately I don't work there. Someone I work with works there also and we were discussing it earlier, today actually. Wish I could help you out!

I got a job in madison as a new grad as did a few of my classmates so while its not a great market its not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I 'think' st marys is opening a new hospital in Janesville in the coming year. Janesville is about 50 minutes away from Madison but a lot of people commute both ways. I know that mercy hospital has labor and delivery and they were recently actively interviewing for several positions in that department. Best of luck! I love Madison.
