Working 2 job vs doing overtime

Published

I was wondering would it be better to work 2 job at 32 hrs an hour each or getting some overtime hours at my first job? Would I make more money after tax with one ( with overtime) or 2 jobs(without overtime)

Thanks guys and gals :)

One of the nurses that I worked with said the best bet is to get a per diem job. She says that the pay is more and you supposedly don't get taxed as much

Your end of the year tax burden is based on income - doesn't matter where it comes from. Be sure to use the same witholding rate (# deductions) with each employer or you could find yourself in a pickle when the income tax bill is computed. If you are picking up per diem work as an 'independent contractor' (no FICA deductions) be sure to stash away at least 28% for taxes.

Thanks guys I shoulda took some accounting class before venturing into health care

If premium OT is available (1.5x or 2x) then that is a better deal. Otherwise, you'll do better with a per diem job because the pay rate is higher.

It definitely depends on where you work. If I pick up an overtime shift, 12 hrs on a weekend night, its like $48/hr vs base rate of about $21.50/hr

I wish we all needed to take accounting before venturing into adulthood :p

A friend and I had a discussion about this a couple days ago about how we are made to take classes like biology and history in our primary education, but never made to take any sort of basic finance class. Most people will never use either of the former after finishing school, but everyone will have to deal with bills and taxes. How about a little more emphasis on practical education?

Anywho, I digress. End of random tangent.

I see your point, but parents can/should be doing this. but I have to admit that in sixth grade math we had what was called the "candy corporation", we bought wholesale, figured a mark up, kept the books etc....... some other product could be selected and the experience maintained.

At what point does OT kick in on your current job?

Take your hourly salary, multiply it by 1.5

Is it higher or lower than the per diem rate?

Theres your answer
