I was wondering if anyone works for a home health care? My friends mom owns her own home health agency. If you work for a home health care do u get convenient hours of get to choose ur hours? My friend says her mom pays the rn's 30/hr but this sounds too good to be true. Anyone experience with home health would appreciate info Thanks.

yup, I am a home care nurse for pediatrics.
It is convenient yes, but there are no benefits. $30.00 an hour your mother pays? That's pretty good.....I make a few dollars less than that an hour. Plus for orientation you get a set rate per hour before you decide if you want a case or not.
If your mom owns the company didn't she tell you about the hours etc??? Just wondering why you are asking if your mom owns one????
As for most (that I know of) they only hire as per diem....but the nurses usually do the same days, hours every week per month etc....and typically it's scheduled a month in advance.... This is for block time though, not just visits.
Also alot of the nurses mistake per diem for doing whatever hours on whatever days they feel like.......I was always told per diem was you do the hours that are needed but pick the days of those available hours that you want to work. For example....if there is Mon, Wed & Fri available from 7a-3p....you choose which days ....but you aren't supposed to choose the hours like one day work 9-2, another 10-3..............usually you do the hours they require but the days of your choosing.
If there are agencies that offer insurance...usually you have to work at least 32 hours per week, and even then the benefits are practically nothing from what I've seen. It's a great job for someone who doesn't need insurance or wants to pick & choose who they will be caring for.......the big plus for me is the 1 on 1 real care......instead of running around like a chicken with it's head cut off.....lol. I am still trying to get a hospital job myself to get the experience........but I am in home care nursing currently.
My friends mom own the company not my mom. But my friend likes to sugar coat everything so I didnt know if i should believe her.
Thanx for the info, it helps.

The company I work for has full time(37.5 hrs) all the way to part time and per diem. There are 2 divisions..the certified and the private side. On the certified side we can't really pick and choose our cases. They are assigned to us and we go.

If you need good affordable benefits you'll need to look for a large well-established HH agency. $30 an hour means basically nothing. You need to know if you also get reimbursement for miles traveled? For time traveled? For charting? Are you issued a company cell phone? Is it $30 per visit rather than per hour?
1. If your visit is 25 miles away you'll spend 30 minutes driving each way, 30 minutes with the patient and 30 minutes charting. That's a total of 2 hours, now you're making $15 an hour and out the cost of your gas as well.
2. If it's $30 per visit again you're making $15 an hour minus gas.
3. If it's $30 per hour and includes travel time, mileage reimbursement and charting time then you are actually making $30 per hour.
I had an HH job making $60 per visit, no reimbursement for gas, no travel or charting time, no cell phone. I'll spare you the details but when everything was considered I was making $10/hr. Also remember that if it's per visit you'll never get paid for overtime no matter how many hours you put in.
Hope that helps

I am wanting to start my own HH agency but am a bit lost as to how and what to bill for services, where to begin the insurance nightmare and how to compensate employees. I've never really been concerned with the compensation of care aspect before so now I am a little lost. Any ideas where to start?
