Hello everyone,
I've been an RN for the last 7 years and am working on my DNP for Family Nurse Practitioner. I really want to start my own business and so I'm thinking about aesthetics as an NP. Since this is not a sub-specially currently offered in curricula, I'm unsure of what kind of training programs or educational programs I should take to prepare me for this kind of work. Any ideas for NY or CT to get started? Has anyone gone down this road with success? I am also considering getting out of the ER and maybe start practicing as an RN in a dermatology or plastics office so I can get more familiar with the environment and network with the doctors. Thoughts?

I just interviewed for an aesthetics position as a nurse practitioner. I do not have any background/experience in aesthetics and I am a new grad FNP. The company said they would send me to a week long training program for laser hair removal and then the staff would train me on botox etc. at the office. Not sure if this helps you at all, but maybe if you gained experience with an aesthetics company that would help you when the time comes to start your own business?

I started out as an RN in the ER as well before eventually becoming a FNP ?
I started working for a medspa part-time while still working in the ER, but quickly fell in love with the aesthetics field. Its been over 15 years (holy cow) and I can honestly say I do not miss the ER at all.
Like you said, because this is not something we are taught in school, it is generally learned working in a medspa and furthering your education by attending courses, conventions and joining different societies.
There are many different courses that you can take to get trained in the treatments - the average price is about $1,000-$3,500 per course.
The laws vary from state to state, but here in CA my medical spa has to be overseen by a MD/DO. But as an FNP, I could move to say AZ and own my medspa completely independently. So just depending on where you are located, that is something to think of as well ?
If you have any questions feel free to reach out! I absolutely love the medical aesthetics field and am always willing to help someone avoid the mistakes I made starting out.

Hi DPhilp,
I'd private message you but I think there's a required number of posts before that option is available. Anyway, I'm an RN interested in aesthetics nursing and I was drawn to your enthusiasm for the field ?
I posted some questions last week and I'm hoping you'll respond. Mainly would like to hear about what you love about the field and how it was transitioning from acute care to the world of cosmetics.
Thanks!
