Hi there RNs.
I am an Aussie trained nurse, currently booked in and studying for the February 2009 CRNE in Vancouver. I have a job offer from a Vancouver hospital, commencing March 2009.
Would it be wiser to work first in Canada for a few weeks or months BEFORE sitting the CRNE,
or,
have I.E.Nurses's found they have passed it okay without having worked in Canada, solely from studying on their own in their home country?
(I realise around 50% of I.E.Ns pass the CRNE on 1st attempt!)
Thanks all.

Hi there Patriven
Don't be scared! It's not a life and death situation! :redpinkhe
Whenever I was worried or stressed out to the max, I had to step back and put things in perspective. Whilst I was freaking out about whether I'd pass or fail, hundreds of innocent people back at home in Australia, in Victoria state were dying from severe bushfires. When I was reminded of that, I would come to the realisation that, gosh, really "it's only an exam".
I used 3 prep textbooks: CNA CRNE prep guide 3rd (2000) & 4th ed (2005) and Lippincott's CRNE prep guide (2008).
I initially tried studying from maternity, paediatric, psych nursing and med-surg textbooks, but I found this was quite futile, because I had no idea exactly as to which specific areas to study. So I stuck with practising multi-choice questions over and over and over again. I took the advice of allnurses members: keep doing practise questions continually, and try to understand WHY the correct answer, is the correct answer, and ofcourse why the other three are wrong. You may eventually get used to CRNE multi-choice test taking strategies.
This worked for me but I can appreciate it may not work for everyone.
hey! i'm planning to take the CRNE too but i have no idea what to do. I'm from philippines too and I'm planning to migrate hopefully next year to canada. I'll probably be taking the exam there but i want to be prepared by then. I'm a U.S registered nurse too, i've taken NCLEX and CGFNS already. my U.S license is actually expiring this coming January and I still haven't left d country for reasons i'm sure we already know.
Anyway, I'm planning to work in Canada instead. i read above that one of you mentioned Kaplan. That's where i reviewed for my NCLEX. I have books by Mosby, Black, Lippincott and Saunders too. Would those be enough to do a self review (since I'm already familiar with the nclex and cgfns exam) for me to have a good chance to pass CRNE by self study? i'll just practice answering test questions again by books and CDs for nclex.. and of course, i'll try the CRNE prep guide too.

Hi all!
I can now answer the question that I posed in the first entry of this very discussion.
I was originally wondering if, as an International Educated Nurse (IEN) whether I would need to work BEFORE taking the CRNE. Thanks for all the supportive responses! I was able to successfully pass the CRNE first go (thank you God!!) without ever having experienced the high quality Canadian Healthcare system.
So for all you IENs considering doing the examination PRE-WORKING, passing it is certainly within the realm of possibility.
