Working in Canada BEFORE sitting CRNE?

Published

Hi there RNs.

I am an Aussie trained nurse, currently booked in and studying for the February 2009 CRNE in Vancouver. I have a job offer from a Vancouver hospital, commencing March 2009.

Would it be wiser to work first in Canada for a few weeks or months BEFORE sitting the CRNE,

or,

have I.E.Nurses's found they have passed it okay without having worked in Canada, solely from studying on their own in their home country?

(I realise around 50% of I.E.Ns pass the CRNE on 1st attempt!)

Thanks all.

welcome to BC! For sure. Well right now, I think we need some certain number of thank you's until we can do any private messaging so when that comes around, I'll forward it to you. What have you done so far?

Actually you need to have 15 legitimate posts (not a simple "okay, thanks" or a "What it that?" kind of post but one that truly contributes to the discussion) before you can send PMs. The moderators are watchful of the two or three word posts and will merge them if necessary.

Thank you Seeker!

Well, so far I have the CRNE prep guide and have the Mosby's comprehensive review of nursing. It looks pretty similar to the exam that I originally sat... but there seem to be a lot of reviews from people saying they've come out of the exam having no idea whether they've passed or not.....so I want to be fully prepared!

I was also wondering if there are any websites with free online practice tests that you can use to prepare, there are lots for the NCEX but not so for CRNE?

Oh Thanks for clearing that up about the number of posts that we need!

No worries I will forward it to both of you.

Yeap I studied from both of those books for the CRNE. I also studied from the Kaplan study guides for the NCLEX. I know people will tell you that the 2 exams are totally different, but the Kaplan study guide also gives you alot of guidance on how to answer multiple choice questions and how you could answer questions through process of elimination...well....at least I thought it was really helpful. I just borrowed these books from the library though...it had already cost enough to mail the books from Canada to Australia then back to Canada again...

Oh yeah...before I forget...there is an online practice exam you can do that is sort of similar to the Prep guide that is on the CRNBC website...I think it costs 40-something dollars...

It's probably a good idea to do it at the end when your confident you know how to answer the prep guide type questions....so in this way, you get a rough idea on how you are going to do in the exam... but this is just a suggestion...

wow...you're brave for cutting it so close... on one hand i think having that extra option to do the exam again in june is good just in case. but then again... we need to be thinking positive thoughts right now!

well if you need any help with studying, i have a copy of most of the notes that have been handed to me so i'll be happy to email you what i have.

:)

There are several threads that discuss resources for studying for the CRNE. Try doing a search by using the search feature at the upper right of your screen using CRNE as your keyword.

Hi all

Thanks for your responses! Keep them coming!

I could start work in March 2009, then sit the June 2009 exam.

My issue is it would be my last and only chance to sit the exam if I did it june, because my 24 month CRNBC file will be destroyed in August 2009 (cause CRNBC give you 2 years to get your exam and 250 hours supervised work completed).

Hello, regarding your worries, I know that the CRNBC allows you to extend your file for 1 more year. Yep, Mine was supposed to expire last October 2008 but I called the CRNBC staff and ask them for an extension and they asked me what is my reason for? I told them I wasn't able to get a Visit Visa and they kindly extend my file up until October 2009. :D. So don't worry about it. I'm pretty sure you can request that too. Uh mm, can you also send me a copy of your notes to my email??? Many many thanks! God bless.

Hello all,

I am also an international nurse from Australia. It has been great to hear from others in such a position.

I too have been studying hard for the CRNE in Toronto in February. I have heard lots of different opinions on the level of difficulty of the exam and the likelihood of a nurse from Australia passing.

I would be interested to hear from people on their exam prep. stategies.

Thank you in anticipation.

Time is getting away . . .

Cheers

Hi all...

good to hear there are many of you all in the same happy and nervous boat as me.

Im a 26yr old grad nurse from perth, booked to sit the CRNE on 4th Feb (after arriving in the country for 3 days), and planning to commence a RN job in March. Im pretty excited, but nervous about whether things will work or fail for me, especially since it has cost me so much money.

Im finding it really hard to study at the moment coz im so excited & busy about my move to Vancouver, but coming on here makes me realise I need to study more. I have found the CRNE prep guide very handy. I got all the questions wrong to start with, but now I understand their rationale more im a bit more confident. I feel there is not much to study except for the prep guide and a generalisation of a med/surg nursing text book. what do you think?

If any of u have any tips or want to chat and share experiences I would love to

Susan

Hi,

I've come from Sydney to BC. I have found the Mosby's Canadian Comprehensive Review of Nursing to be really helpful. Lots of prep questions and review txt.

Good luck!!
