Work as LPN while going to Rn school?

Published

Do you think it is best to focus on just school or work as a LPN while attending Rn school?

Well in a perfect world we would all be able to quit our jobs to go back to school, but I have to work...:crying2: I get no financial aid and my husband is a full time student too. I think if you are a brand new lpn with little or no work experience then it is probably a good idea a least a couple shifts a week, though you definitely ought to make school a priority. So you just have to balance it. I entered a bi-level program where all but a few of my classmates just finished the lpn portion of the program. Though I thought I was a little academically rusty, I am keeping up with them just fine. I am actually really suprised by how many things I know just because of working and being out there in the real world, though I have only been an lpn a couple years.

If I could, I'd drop down in my hours while attending school. Unfortunately, I gotta work full time.

I know several people who did the bridge program while working part or full time. I'm counting on my years of experience to help get me through most of it.

I'm in an LPN/BSN bridge program and we are required to keep our LPN license current---which means working. I work 40+ hours/week over breaks and about 20 during the semester.

My goal was to avoid emptying my life's savings, so I had to work full-time as an LVN while attending an RN program. Sometimes it is simply not practical to just focus on school when the student is also the sole provider and can depend on nobody else to pay expenses.

I worked 32 hours per week as an LVN while completing my associate degree in nursing (RN). I attended school every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday while working 16-hour weekend double shifts as an LVN at a local nursing home every Saturday and Sunday. I never had any financial worries while attending school because I was earning a rather competitive wage as an LVN.
