I'm in the process of writing a program grant that would combine the specialties of psychiatric mental health with women's health in a masters degree program. Nurses would graduate and be able to take certification exams in both of these areas.

As a women's health practitioner for over 20 years, I know that having psych mental health expertise would make a HUGE difference for many women! If the women's health practitioners in OB-GYN offices could better help women with PMS, Post Partum Depression, Panic Disorder, eating disorders etc - that would really help! And if the psych mental health folks could understand the role that hormones could play - while also being able to provide needed preventive care for women in mental health facilities - that would also be great.

My question to the folks on this list is:

What do you think about this?

Would you ever consider a masters degree that combined these specialties?

Would you be interested if it was entirely offered on line?

I personally think it is a great idea. I do a lot of counseling in my work and probably would have applied to that program! All of us women are a little crazy, or at least stressed by all the load we have on us. I better quit writing. :chair: The hole I'm digging is getting deeper.

I think psyc should be a component to ANY nursing degree. It is very necessary in dealing with people...especially people under stress. Most in need of health care are under some stress.

I think that is a great idea. The university I attneded has a fast track kind of thing for Adult NPs or FNPs who want to get their mental health certification. In my area NPs and physicians hand out Paxil and Prozac like it's candy, so I'm sure there would be a lot of interest. You'd think these people would want to know something about the conditions their treating on a regular basis. If you don't mind me asking where are you located?

I personally think it is a great idea! I would definitely consider getting a masters degree that combined these 2 specialities, and would take the coursework if it was offerred online (that is my own personal preference). I imagine that you will find a lot of nurses interested, whether here on these boards or elsewhere. If you get this off the ground, can you keep us posted? I'd be interested if you could pm me or drop me an e-mail, as well.

7 years later... My dream is to combine my two passions: Psych and Women's Health. I'll graduate with my BSN in Dec. and plan to work for 2-3 yrs before going back for my MSN (or DNP). I don't want to choose between the specialty programs because I love them both!!! OP, if you're still out there (or anyone else reading this), please tell me what I can do to combine these two specialties. Is it even possible?

My ultimate goal is to open up a women's holistic health care center. It would include women's physical and mental health (including a teen clinic), a weight loss clinic, and maybe even professional massage and med spa services (big maybe). What can I do?????
