Will volunteer nursing abroad (3 months) hurt me before my 1st job?

Currently working toward my BSN (as regular student).

I have a question about volunteer trips to other countries. I’d go after I get my BSN and after I (eventually) pass my NCLEX and get my RN. I’d like to go on a Volunteer Nursing trip in Asia for about 3 months, probably India. I’d like to do this before getting my first Nursing job here in California.

My question is: Do you think a 3-month Volunteer trip after getting my RN might hurt me when applying for my first Nursing job (when I come back)? I’ve heard some employers look down on extended travel breaks.

I'd appreciate any constructive input ?

If I were a hiring manager, I would not consider the fact that you took time to participate in a medical mission as negative or a disqualifier.  Having said that, if the facilities that you are considering applying to hire and start new graduate nurses as a cohort, the timing might be problematic.

My understanding of these volunteer nursing projects is that they seek EXPERIENCED nurses, not newbies who need extended training. (Note: I can be mistaken here.)

Also, if OP were to serve somewhere and then return Stateside, I don't know if s/he would qualify for any type of  newbie residency/internship.
