Will my misdemeanors prevent me from nursing in MA?

Published

I am a 24 yr old who at age 21 got into some trouble, I got arrested 2 times for possession of marijuana... one conviction got dropped and the other I complete probation and paid my fines and its supposed to be "off" my record. The 3rd misdemeanor i got was DUI... again I completed probation however this one is not off my record. (please dont judge my rought year my mother passed away the year before and it was not a good time in my life) Since then i have turned my life around and have gone back to school in hopes of becoming a nurse. Will this affect me getting into nursing school or getting a job as a nurse?

No judgement here. We've all had rough times.

You can check with the state board of nursing to see exactly what the requirements are. We were just given all the information in preparation for pinning next month, but I don't have it handy right now. I think all the information is in the documents on this web page:

http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=eohhs2terminal&L=6&L0=Home&L1=Provider&L2=Certification,+Licensure,+and+Registration&L3=Occupational+and+Professional&L4=Nursing&L5=Licensing&sid=Eeohhs2&b=terminalcontent&f=dph_quality_boards_nursing_p_good_moral_licensure&csid=Eeohhs2

Hope this helps!

Check with your school and BON. Schools do CORI checks before admission, so you may want to discuss your situation with them. Good luck!
