Hey guys and gals,
I'm currently in the process of applying to various online-based PMHNP programs. I was recently accepted into Wilkes University to start in the Fall 2018. While this is great news, I have some questions and worries. As you probably realize, just about every PMHNP program out there is discussed pretty extensively on this website, and as a result, it's possible to get a good feel. I know for instance that UAB is a popular program to apply to, but there is some mixed reviews overall. I also know that UND seems to have a highly respected and thorough program that is cheaper than most. There seems to be some pretty good information on just about every PMHNP program out there, without exception, until you search for Wilkes. I have seen various attempts over the years of people asking about Wilkes, and typically there is either no response, or a response indicating that the person plans on attending the program next Fall (or something along those lines). However, there is zero follow-up with information about how the program is actually going. I have no idea how this is possible. This website is the yelp for nursing programs, and yet, we have no ratings, reviews or feedback. I hate to sound dramatic, but it seems like some crazy conspiracy.
Anyway, can anybody who has attended this program, or knows somebody who has attended this program provide any feedback? I just want to know about their experience overall.
QuoteIf it is St. Thomas University in Miami, STAY AWAY!! STU was the most unorganized program I have ever been a part of. The teachers were not helpful, and the "clinical support specialists" were very rude. I've enjoyed Wilkes; Â the staff is very helpful and responsive. There is not much for lectures, and a lot of it is self-learned, but they set you up for success, and as long as you put in the work, you'll learn.Â
Thank you so much!! I'm ready to start classes in June but I kept looking around for schools because St Thomas has a lot of bad reviews and I find that concerning.  So funny because when I asked the admissions lady about clinicals she made it sound like they have a big network so finding a place shouldn't be a problem. As far as Wilkes, I read on multiple sites that students sometimes end up paying a few thousands of dollars to a 3rd party company that takes care of finding students places to do clinical hrs. What a mess!Â

I know of 2 people that Wilkes found placement for including myself. We are in a state that has a small population though. 44% of Wilkes students are from Pennsylvania and I would bet even more from the surrounding states. Those areas are especially bad places to try to find a preceptor. You better have something lined up or expect to pay.

Also, STU 7-week class duration. By the time you realize the class is a sham, it's too late to drop with a refund, and you'll be responsible for that tuition. At least with Wilkes and 12-week classes, they are very upfront and give you a warning about the deadline to drop a class without repercussion.Â
I found my own clinical sites, so I'm not sure how Wilkes does finding clinical sites. All I do know is that STU was rude and was of no help when I asked for assistance with clinical site placement.Â
