Wilkes University PMHNP; Seeking feedback from anybody who has ever been in this program

Updated:   Published

Hey guys and gals,

I'm currently in the process of applying to various online-based PMHNP programs. I was recently accepted into Wilkes University to start in the Fall 2018. While this is great news, I have some questions and worries. As you probably realize, just about every PMHNP program out there is discussed pretty extensively on this website, and as a result, it's possible to get a good feel. I know for instance that UAB is a popular program to apply to, but there is some mixed reviews overall. I also know that UND seems to have a highly respected and thorough program that is cheaper than most. There seems to be some pretty good information on just about every PMHNP program out there, without exception, until you search for Wilkes. I have seen various attempts over the years of people asking about Wilkes, and typically there is either no response, or a response indicating that the person plans on attending the program next Fall (or something along those lines). However, there is zero follow-up with information about how the program is actually going. I have no idea how this is possible. This website is the yelp for nursing programs, and yet, we have no ratings, reviews or feedback. I hate to sound dramatic, but it seems like some crazy conspiracy.

Anyway, can anybody who has attended this program, or knows somebody who has attended this program provide any feedback? I just want to know about their experience overall.

Wow, that's a lot but if others have done it, it should be doable. I think if we collectively form a group we should be able to get it done. Also if others here have study materials that they have used, we would appreciate a little help/tip/guidance etc...

@sweetdee  I am going into the PMHNP program, but I don't have a BSN, I will be in the RN to NP Program

@Tip2datop & @sweetdee

I am currently in the PMHNP program at Wilkes, I started January 2022, and am I am withdrawing from the program completely.

It has been a nightmare trying to get in contact with anyone in the admissions office, the financial aide office, and student success office. Weeks have gone by with multiple phone calls and messages left for my student success counselor with no response. I was recently told that there were no messages found in their inbox and that I will need to submit records to prove it if I want to escalate it further.

The coursework is a lot for this program because it is truly 15-20 hours of reading for each class every week. It is a very time consuming and isolating program. Discussion boards are due every week and there are multiple projects throughout the semester that are due as well. I was surprised that there were no recorded lectures, and that only power points of the chapters were provided. In my experience, each test has covered up to 12 chapters of information and will have anywhere between 25 - 50 questions. It is a lot of stress.

If you love to read textbooks, can follow a rubric, and apply the instructor's weekly feedback - you will do fine. If you are looking to build connections with other students, have an auditory learning piece to the curriculum, and feel supported from the staff beyond your instructors - this is not the right program for you.

I am currently looking at the Willkes program. I like the price, the fact that they find you a preceptor and facility and even though the hours seem like a lot, how else are we going to learn unless we study?

I currently work full time, 5-8 hour shifts and have requested to start working 4-10's so I would have an extra day for school. I'm wondering if this is going to be enough.

Any thoughts or ideas. If I go with Wilkes, I want to start the end of August.

Sorry for the late reply. When working towards my BSN, I found 5-8's more challenging to complete the program than 4-10's or 3-12's. So your decision is a good one. I decided not to go with Wilkes University, and I will be attending the University of Cincinnati. Good luck!

Thank you for the response. I have decided to go with Purdue Global University instead of Wilkes. I've applied but I may check out Cincinnati too. What do you like about Cincinnati?

@CMnurse Can you give anyinsight on the Purdue program? Was are the weekly assignment requirements/work load/discussion boards etc look like? Is it doable for the working adult?

also interested. How is Purdue Global. THe advisor said they have weekly seminars that are recorded. They use virtual reality for skills? Are there weekly discussions? Clinical placement help?

Hi hope all is well! I am beginning my PMHNP program at Wilkes this Jan 2024 and was looking for some insight. I know the program is basically self taught, but I would like to hear other's perspectives and experiences about the program and the courses specifically.

I start post master certification in January, but feel like they have been amazing so far. Well organized and very helpful getting everything in order. Very different from the poorly prepared St. Thomas University in Miami. That was a HORRIBLE experience. I'm happy so far, but we will see how it is when classes start.

Hello everyone! 🙂 does anyone have any updates about Wilkes University? I am registered, and set to start NP Program at St Thomas but I heard about Wilkes and I'm thinking about switching to them. From what I am reading it seems that they are better than St Thomas as far as teaching and communication. Their classes are 12 weeks instead of 7, which it makes more sense considering the amount of information we will be learning. Any advice? 🙂

If it is St. Thomas University in Miami, STAY AWAY!! STU was the most unorganized program I have ever been a part of. The teachers were not helpful, and the "clinical support specialists" were very rude. I've enjoyed Wilkes;  the staff is very helpful and responsive. There is not much for lectures, and a lot of it is self-learned, but they set you up for success, and as long as you put in the work, you'll learn.
