Hi all! I'm applying ti this program. Anyone else applying or currently enrolled? Would love to hear your experiences!
Hi! Where do you live? I'm in NJ. I wonder if the lack of information on here is related to perhaps a small class size? Since this program requires three on site visits perhaps people are focusing on more convenient options, for those who live far away.
I also have seen some frustration on here and on Facebook regarding this program. But I also hear that about a lot of the online programs. The only programs I've heard rave reviews about have been the very expensive ones. I feel like forewarned is forearmed. We'll be fine.
The biggest area of frustration I hear about is clinical preceptorship. I begin my first mental health job in detox in a couple weeks, for a company that has a lot of mental health facilities. The number one reason I've done this is to begin networking and acquiring clinical preceptor. It seems like that's 90% of the struggle.
Wilkes has a Facebook group for the primary mental health nurse practitioner students. Check it out! I'm thinking about starting a group specifically for our cohort.
St Augustine, FL here. I searched around for the Facebook group that you mentioned, but couldn't find anything. I think starting a group for the spring 2019 class would be a great idea.
Congratulations on your new job! I've heard the same thing about finding a preceptor. A few of my co-workers were in the same situation and some ended up having to travel up to 50-60 miles to their preceptor sites after searching for months. I'm not sure of the policy with this school, but some other schools do not allow you to do your precepting at your place of employment.
Correct. Wilkes does not allow you, for my understanding, to use your place of employment as your preceptor location. My employer is part of a larger company with other facilities. The other facilities, where I would be hopefully able to get a preceptor, I would be spending my time at without pay as a student. My understanding is that is perfectly acceptable. You just can't be at your job on your day off.
My new job is going to be in detox, other facilities deal with other disorders. We are going to be required to do clinical hours in child adolescent settings, looks like 50 hours from the experience of current students. So I hope to go to an adolescent facility, in addition to places within the organization that provide anxiety and depression related treatment.
I'd also like to get time with a Telepsych nurse practitioner, although it does sound like I would have to go to the office of that practitioner to participate in Telehealth. If I'm able to I would also like to try to get in with a provider who uses animal assisted therapy. In reality, we'll see how much freedom of choice I have. I might just be lucky to get a preceptor at all.
