Why did you want to be a nurse?

It's a simple questions that so many seem to struggle with.

There are mutiple reasons.

I've always been one of those people who likes to to know about a lot of different things. I like to be spontaneous at times, I like routine at times, and I love to enjoy life, Nursing provides all of that. Knowing that I love to talk to people, learn new facts, and meets new people, I knew I needed a job that could complimetn those aspects of myself. I also wanted a job that I could give my all, but my career not be my all (if that makes sense).

Nursing just fit, it kind of hard to explain, now that I think of it. Nursing fit my personality. It wasn't as simple as "I wanted to take care of people", although that was a portion of it. Nursing is the perfect blend of social science and clinical science. Nursing matched the goals I had for my life. Nursing catered to the schedule I want, It gave me the human contact/interacion I wanted.

After having seizures since I was 12 then brain surgery, bacterial meningitis, skull bone abscess, plate put in, Stevens Johnson syndrome and septic shock, I decided I wanted to go into medicine. I became fascinated at learning about the body and the pathophysiology behind what had happened to me. I had good nurses and not so good nurses and the good nurses were so caring and compassionate that they really helped a young irritable cranky 17 get through a tough time. I decided I wanted to help people get through those through those tough times too. Combine that with my love of pathophysiology and I chose nursing!

I want to be a nurse because I look totally awesome in my scrubs! haha I kid! I kid!

I worked on healthcare for many years in administrative roles at a few hospitals. I loved the whole hospital environment but I can't stand sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day. I need a job where i'm constantly on the move, constantly having to think, helping people who can hardly help themselves, that's heavy in the sciences because I LOVE science, that allows you room to grow or move around if you get bored in a certain specialty, and that at the end of the day you leave knowing that you helped somebody when they needed it the most, even if their condition don't improve, just giving them comfort during their final days/hours.

My high school offered medical classes taught by registered nurses. I took those classes as electives and the teacher's passion for nursing was what really caught me. I like how in nursing you can never know it all, it's hand's on, you meet interesting people, and you really do change lives. I do not see myself working a regular office job in a cubical, I would rather walk fast and handle unpredictable situations. I never thought of being a nurse until my senior year of high school. Before that I thought it was just passing medications and taking vitals. Once I learned it's way more than that I saw it as an admirable career with great benefits. I'm glad I chose it, can't see myself doing anything else. :nurse:
