I'm in my first semester of nursing school and we are getting ready to take our test on fluids and electrolytes. My question concerns the three different types of IV solutions. I understand what hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic definitions are however, when I try to apply them to real life problems I get confused.
If you have a patient with massive blood loss which solution is the best to use? If they have a GI bug is it okay to use an isotonic solution or should you use a hypotonic solution?
Maybe I'm just overthinking them but the more I try to break it down the more confused I become.
Thanks
