I've noticed that bedside care is becoming less focused on the holistic well being of the patient and clinical outcomes and more based on customer satisfaction and staying in the green in regards to the bottom line. Also it seems like with so many policies from so many different organizations, the constant ego battles between staff, management and other disciplines, and people from outside the profession influencing and changing out profession, that the patient essentially gets "lost" in all of this. I sometimes feel as though a hospital is like a cattle mill, but for people. I also see a lot of nurses resistant and hesitant to said changes and it burns them out... so why don't more people just accept things for what they are and make their personal and professional lives a lot easier?
I mean let's face it, bedside patient care isn't what you see on the Johnson and Johnson commercials, it's becoming more institutionalized and corporate. Nursing isn't a "calling" or anything like that, it's a job or career for some and nothing more or less. And those who do not accept change are often ostracized or left behind.
These are just my thoughts. Feel free to comment or discuss.

I feel that just going along with things would make things easier in the short run. However, just because it is easier doesn't make it right. I think we have to stand up for the things we believe in. Patients are not just another Press Ganey survey.. They are people and we need to try to do our best to treat them as such. If you were in their place would you want the nurse who will do the minimum, or the nurse who will be your advocate?

There should not be a disconnect between quality patient care and patient satisfaction. I consider the surveys as a tool to "test" the PATIENT'S perception of quality, but the nurse's perception is so much different. The only thing the perceived concepts have in common is a good outcome for the patient.
But what do you do when standing up for what you believe in gets no support or produces tangible results. If everyone can see that the long term is as bad as you see it, then they should be more quick with health care reform that puts the patient and clinical outcomes first.

Don't even get me started on the J & J commercials.
Like I have even one spare second to sit on a patients bed and sing: banana nana fo fana fee fi fo fana..........that commercial is so----demeaning.

Lots of fads just blow over. There is no need to make a stand.
Just quietly go about your work as always and ignore the scripting or whatever you disagree with.
