Why do nurses feel the need to put RN on their license plates?

Published

I have always wondered why RN's need to display their title on their license plate? I have never seen a teacher, lawyer, accountant, librarian, coach, housekeeper, CNA/PCT, chef, mayor etc....... put this on their license plate. Seriously, I don't understand it. I usually see at least 2 a day. Is this just in my area or does this happen everywhere. I would like to know what it is about RN's that feel the need to announce it to everyone what they do? I understand we have all worked hard for our license but come on these other professions have worked just as hard if not more. I know there are more important things going on in the world but I just want some opinions on this. :p

I don't do this. When I am not at work or doing some kind of function. Prefer to go incognito. I get that there are "Ricky Rescues" but I got tired of everybody asking me medical questions at every function. In my opinion this is just attention seeking behavior.

My sister asked me one time when a request for a medical professional was called on a flight we were on, why I didn't respond and I told her that generally as a group, nurses prefer to fly under the radar and we don't like to advertise we are nurses when we are going about our daily lives.  My own attendings have also said when they go on vacation, they do not advertise the fact that they are MDs and would prefer to just enjoy their vacation.  Additionally, it would have to be in my specialty and I would have to have some knowledge of what is going on from my own experience as a nurse and APRN.   During that particular flight, it was hypoglycemia and DM2 and the person had 2 EMTs and 1 IM MD helping him out so I could just sit back and enjoy my flight.
