I am desperately trying to find a job as an RN. I have been out of hospital practice (in clinics) for about 20 years and took a refresher course with hospital practicum. Did great and got rave reviews - but can find NO JOB. I am sure part of it is my age (63), but it is illegal to discriminate. Of course, if I had a decent paying job I could afford a lawyer to fight that BUT..........
Why do I see almost all RN job offerings for Dialysis nurses???? Is it because their is poor job retention in Dialysis? Is it because the world needs so many more Dialysis nurses? What's Up?
Any answers would help me out here.
Thanks,
Noor

Yes it is illegal to discriminate, and dont take this the wrong way, but can you meet the physical requirements of the job that your looking for ? I would say not to look in the help wanted ads, but find out where the local freestanding dialysis centers are, dress in your Sunday best, with your resume and license and fill out an application. IE go to these freestanding centers with the intention of starting a job their.

Maybe a typical full time job as a clinical nurse is not best suited for you. There are other options that would probably be better for your hapiness. There was another topic in here recently about someone looking for 1:1 care for their grandmother.
I'd be willing to bet that yes, your age is part of the reason you have not been hired yet. But, what is closing some doors for you may be what opens other....more desireable doors. Look into 1:1 home care. I would be willing to bet, with your age, you would have an easier time gaining a family's trust before some nursing student with little to no experience.
Although I surely welcome all comments - it seems that some of you TOO are focusing on my age. Yes, I am 63. Can I do the running, lifting, etc. that is necessary? YES! I certainly proved that while doing my practicum with the refresher course I took. Do I have experience and knowledge that it took 20+ years to obtain. Do I want an acute care setting with all that goes with it? Yes. I am a terrific nurse. (Yes I WILL toot my own horn). When some of you are 63, I hope you remember replying to my post and suggesting jobs that are "more suited" to my age. "Age is just mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter". I feel 17. But I have life experience and nursing experience that is being wasted. It makes me angry. I will be researching legal aspects for the jobs I have been refused while ads are still in the newspaper for those jobs.
Please, don't think that 63 makes me a useless old woman. I am NOT.
I want desperately to be part of an acute care setting either in Gen. Surg, OB or Med/Surg.

Ageism exists in the nursing profession as well as elsewhere. We have to re-educate, especially outside the medical model view of nursing/health care professional. Nursing has not expanded its view of itself due to the training, education and limited work roles. The structures will be going through a transformation of which we will need to assert the breadth of our knowledge about community, transformative processes, complementary care, healing practices and their derivation, and integrated team development in re-inventing and caring for all in our communities.

I just read some of this thread which is very inspirational - https://allnurses.com/michigan-nurses/mature-nurses-over-64064-page15.html . Lots of positivity which is often missing from other threads on this board. What is the story with the hospital where you did your practicum? Do they have any internships you can apply for? What about internships/new grad programs at other area hospitals? Perseverance is key at any age. There has to be an employer out there who will be glad to hire someone with your experience.
Good luck.

Don't count on it! For every older, experienced nurse who is out there and would like to return to bedside nursing, there is a new grad who is ready to take the same job at half the salary, and none of the knowledge of how nurses are used and abused. You are not an attractive job applicant if you are older and have been out of the work force for even a few years. I am 53 and ran into the same problem. I could not get a job because I did not have "recent acute care experience", but I could not get a job to obtain the "recent acute care experience". It is a catch 22, and the hospitals are counting on the older nurses not wanting to make a fuss, and just giving up. Tell me how much "recent acure care experience" does a new grad have- none. Student nursing with an instructor does not count as "recent acute care experience". And no, I do not think that I should take a "refresher course" for $2000 out of my pocket, when hospitals are more than happy to spend several times that amount on a new grad. Hospitals are always complaining that "there is a nursing shortage" and there are not enough nurses out there to hire. If that is the case, why are they not stepping up to the plate and offering refresher courses for older nurses who want to come back to work? They could require something like a two year agreement to work at the hospital in exchange for the refresher course.
I took the "New York In Your Face" route , and filed an EEOC Age Discrimination complaint against a hospital here. I am mediating my case, and am just waiting for my hearing date. I have all my ducks lined up (evidence) , and I sent them all to the EEOC. If I don't get what I want I will be filing a law suit. I have already contacted an attorney. I will keep you posted. I am tired of being jerked around. JMHO and my NY $0.02.

You go, Noor! I'm over 60 and recently finished school, so I'm looking for a job in an acute setting also. I believe my age is a negative influence on my job search too. Some of my 40 year old classmates think I'm overly sensative about this issue. That could be because they don't see me as old. I can run circles around most of them---literally. I've guilted a few of them in meeting me at the park for a brisk walk and invariably, I've ended up dragging their coughing, gasping butts most of the way around the course at an accommodating 2.7 mph. Most of my classmates didn't exercise and many of them smoked. They all ate junk food everyday and most were tired and described themselves as "feeling like crap all of the time." I work hard to eat right, exercise, and maintain my strength and flexibility. I resent being judged by some sweeping generalization defining me as "a used-up, old woman."
Good luck with the job search.
