I was just wondering if there was a relationship between pet type, gender and nursing specialty....Post your responses...

I wish I had the time for a dog. I love them. I treat them like they were my children. I'm allergic to cats but I despise them anyway. They want affection (rubbing around your legs anyone?) but are so moody and aloof as one poster said.

I had a mixed border collie and springer spaniel when I was a kid. Named her Millie. I loved coming home from school and seeing her wag her tail and get all excited to see me. And somehow she knew when I was down, because she would always come sit next to me and lay her head on my shoulder as if to say "it'll be ok, you have me."

I'm moving into an apt that allows dogs but I work full time and go to school full time and I don't think it's fair to leave a dog inside all day in a small apt.

I love all dogs but my favorites are bulldogs, pugs, and labs. There is one breed, can't remember the name of it, maybe begins with a p, has lots and lots of folds and is very short haired. I really like them but I hear they have lots of skin issues with their folds and live short lives.

Personally, I pick my dogs from the Humane Society. I don't want some pure bred that has been bred solely for money. Not that all do that, but my experience has been that.

Here's the dog I was talking about, a shar pei:

Woops, forgot to answer the rest...

3 girls and one boy for me, mixed breeds. Psych specialty. Oldest dog is a female, Chihuahua mix, 4.5 lbs,10 years old, sleeps on the bed with me, or naps on the chair next to me, follows me around for all chores. One vet asked what she was, and I replied, "A hairy lipoma."

Specializes in Jack of all trades, and still learning.
female, case manager, 3 boston terriers (1 breeding pair which has had 3 litters and 1 6 month old male pup from the last)

they run the house...not uncommon to find at least one not only in bed with us, but under the covers....

we also have a dsh cat with a major case of role confusion...

and since i cant resist the chance to show them off...here is frankie, bella, and guido...

Female, med-surg, one cat, and a bunch of fish!!!!

We (hubby and I) were planning to wait on the whole pet thing until after we finally settled down (we're hoping to do some traveling, me as an RN, him a rad-tech eventually) and had the time to devote to them. That all changed last summer ('06) when this adorable little girl found us:

She's a stray alright, pretty darn aloof, but cuddly when she wants to be. Stella is incredibly sweet and really low-maintenance, which is perfect for us. We're hoping eventually to get an Italian Greyhound (I need to pm Dutchy about that, that just reminded me!) but because they require alot of work (paper-training, obedience, etc.) and time, we'll probably wait til after we get the traveling bug taken care of! ;)

As for me and my hubster, we've both grown up around dogs all of our lives and having a cat was a pretty big change, especially one who's terrified of outside (her stumpy half-tail clues me in to why she's probably not too keen on cars and the like) but she's so easy and sweet, we kept her. I always wanted a kitty growing up but mom's terribly allergic. Now I finally get to have my Stella and wouldn't trade her for the world!!!!

Female, LPN/LVN, LTC

Currently a fish tank, 3 dogs (beagle mix(10), shep mix(2) and a stray(?)) 1 cat, 1 miniature horse and 1 pygmy goat. used to have chickens; I kinda miss that. They are so much fun!!

We've had the usual hamsters. Son(15) wants dragons and snakes

I'd love to have a lhasa and a golden retriever :)

Specializes in Community, OB, Nursery.

Female, mother/baby/high-risk antepartum.

We used to have a sweet black Lab girl.

We had to give her away because we were both working FT & it wasn't fair to her to be stuck at home alone all day. We miss her.

Specializes in ER OB NICU.

House supervisor-proud mom to harlequin, merle great dane SADIE, the biggest baby ever. LOVESSSSSSSSSSSS her mom. Can squeeze into the smallest space to sit next to mom, (yes she owns the furniture) Sometimes sits like a person backed up with hindend only on sofa, and legs on floor, other times sprawled to cover 7 foot sofa . BARKS LIKE A GIANT AT the littlest leaf blowing or squirrel climbing a pole a she glances out the window. Sounds like she would eat you alive, but if male unknown to her enters, she tucks her tail and shakes Quite an unexpected site. Abundant energy, but content to be a couch potato. FAVORITE spot, and meal, the recliner. Has eaten the end of the right arm of three recliners down to the wood, THEN SHE IS DONE!!!! Just likes that natual wood, I guess. Patient to a fault, has never counter surfed. Can be two inches from your plate, but does not take a bite unless invited. Has consumed her weight in hot dogs (120 plus) almost montlhy it seems. HER FAVORITE TREAT.. Her buddy is a 4 year old short haired fox terrier (20 lbs) who has tried to convince her since we got her (she is 18 months) that he is the BOSS> KIND OF HARD when she LOVINGLY puts his whole neck in her mouth. NEVER BITES

IT funny the respect she gets, when , in reality, she is a baby. SHE IS BEAUTIFUL

LOVVVVVVVVWWWWWWWWW my Sadie. Actually was given a litter mate first who turned out to be deaf, and almost blind. I live on a really busy emergency route, and could not phantom a dog that could not hear my warnings. HE was rehomed to a dog trainer for nursing home dogs, and of dear and blind dogs. We had named him Dante, really confused my grandson that now we had Sadie.

Dad raised coonhounds, have always had pet dogs. Tried others -parrot, gerbil, etc, but mans best friend has my heart.

We also inheirited a cat left behind by the homeowner behind us. HE is a great hunter, but stands up agains my storm door to let me know when it is time to eat. (Fox terrier has gender/breed confusion, as tries to mate the cat!!!!

Male, HSA (Pseudo-CNA), with two Dachshunds (peanut and louis) and two cats (Smudge and Paco). I love them all.

M Yellow lab couch potato hope to be ER RN....

See there are others that love labs, as well as yellow ones too. Your couch potato lab may be a great candidate for Pets on Wheels. If he/she is laid back, has a great temperment (as most labs do) and loves people and follows commands....you may want to try it. Very rewarding for both the dog & the people.

i am w/o a doubt, a die-hard, dog-lover.

i have cried tears of joy as well as grief, for them, to them and with them.

i love them more than most people.

Me too Leslie, my sentiments exactly. Also, cry, tears dripping the pages of reading Marley and any of John Katz books.
