Who's going to Anesthesia school?

We've had several threads from everyone saying they were accepted to various schools, but if everyone is willing let's do one big thread for everyone that will be starting anesthesia school this summer or fall. If you don't mind please include where you applied, the status from each school ( meaning didn't get an interview, interviewed and not accepted/made alternate/accepted), and the school you chose and why. Thanks, so much!

I applied to :

1) Medical College of Georgia- interviewed and made alternate

2) Samford (in Birmingham)- interviewed and accepted

3) University of Alabama at Birmingham- interviewed and accepted and will be going there this fall. I chose UAB because I loved the Director and all of their clinicals are in Birmingham, so I won't have to travel all over the state.

My Stats: about a 3.6 GPA, GRE 1120, 2 years of Trauma/Neuro and now Open Heart.

Michigan State-interviewed, not accepted -this will be a great school someday. All of their pieces are there, but they just need to fit together. Has great director and great sites. I was nailed on my experience of only a year-ish. Interview was a lot of ethical based questions. This program needs strong nurses to apply because it is still so new and not yet respected in the clinical field

Oakland University-interviewed not accepted-kind of sad when I was not accepted, but I did not fit very well into the "Beaumont" environment. They also have a Kalamazoo based program that takes 2 students every year (only 2 or 3 apply). You get 30K but you have to commit to 5 years when your done! I hated this interview. Each room had a few different people and you had 10 minutes to impress. Then you had to write an essay at the end when your mind was already fried. This school did not give me the warm and fuzzy feeling like some schools did. Also, it is kind of hard to get any information out of these people such as at their information sessions which I wouldn't bother attending. Has lots of great technology and tons of OR rooms.

MUSC-interviewed, not accepted- VERY VERY VERY surprised I was not accepted because I thought the interview went well, great school, great students, very approachable faculty with lots of guidance. They interviewed 50 students for 28 seats I think. Interview consisted of a long test that they said didn't count and tonnnnnnssss of clinical questions. You kind of dig your own grave in the interview. ie-dont talk about a drug you know nothing about because they will keep expanding on that knowledge.

U of D Mercy-interview, ACCEPTED Great school, expensive but loans will make it work. Faculty, Students, and clinical sites rock! They really care about you. Attend these interview sessions and get to know the faculty and what they want. I am so happy I got in cause it's my first choice. These people will make you a great CRNA!

Gooding-canceled interview-have heard nothing but great things, but did not interview

U of M Flint-they have an early and late interview process, this program is cheap and only 24 months, but I have found the director to be very unapproachable. She keeps a tight shift. Have heard that this school is hardcore and not helpful to students.. but it is U of M (even if they are Flint)

Bottom line-know what you are looking for in a school, I would not apply to any school until you have at least 1 year of experience.. they just arent taking students like that anymore (as I have come to find out) and it will waste your money. Do as much as you can to stand out on your unit-precept (common interview question) be in charge, be at meetings or on boards-dont just punch in/out, take the worst patients, get your useless ccrn (you will learn a lot studying) talk to the directors/staff/students as much as possible and get out of your comfort zone.

They are not taking students with less than one year experience because .......to be a "new nurse", then a CRNA is ******* dangerous.

You can take the sickest patients ever, but one years experience is not enough. Bottom line.......and these schools know it.
