meg whitman is trying her hand at a manner of union busting – and her degree of success will help determine whether she's elected governor in november.

several major labor unions have launched campaigns to elect democrat jerry brown, with the california nurses association taking a particularly aggressive tack. even before the primary, a delegation from the union was dogging billionaire whitman at public events, dressing up in whitman wigs and featuring its own queen meg. a sampling of its satirical slogans: "only the rich deserve health care." "rich enough to rule." "we can't afford our democracy so why not try a monarchy?"

the nurses union has set up a facebook page, www.queenmeg2010.com. it's bought ads on spanish-language radio, reminding latino voters of her strong "no amnesty, no driver licenses, no sanctuary cities, no state universities for illegal immigrants" language during the primary. they're also planning to launch a campaign targeting women voters.

whitman has struck back by setting up her own website for nurses, www.truthfornurses.com. she points out that only one in four nurses here belong to the statewide union. she has done two mailings so far to california nurses. her poll of nurses shows whitman and brown in a statistical dead heat (the nurses union counters that the poll methodology was rigged).....

Congrats, you caught a typo!

$130 per person is still excessive.

The numbers posted still add up to $374,349. Thats still how many dinners out and Vegas vacations nurses paid for and didn't get to enjoy?

Don't get me wrong, I'm pro-union. I'm just not in favor of union management that spends their members dues on luxury items in the name of promoting the cause. The CNA's own financial statements speak for themselves when it comes to spending funds with very little conscious.

I'll also never support an organization that uses blatant ridicule as a promotional tool.

1. mistating that number by a factor of 10 was not a typo. It was either (charitable interpretation) a major math error or (less charitable interpretation) a deliberate inflation.

2. Nobody was taking a "vegas vacation". Those are the expenses of a series of large and long lasting organizing campaigns that added thousands of members to our organization. The money was not spent on some sort of imaginary junkets for a few elite as you would like to pretend. Most of it was spent on the expenses of a lot of front line organizers and volunteer members and the rest was spent on food and meeting rooms for prospective members. The numbers look big because they encompass many events over an extended period of time for large numbers of people. I'm sure that whoever in the Whitman campaign was paid to comb through all that data from the LM-2 also found similarly expensive numbers from other big organizing campaigns in other cities. But the numbers from Vegas are convenient to highlight because of the "sin city" connotations it has in many peoples' minds. Organizing is very expensive wherever you do it, which is why most unions don't do much of it. CNA/NNOC invests more of our budget in organizing than any other union, which is why we are growing so fast.

3. Politicians like Whitman, who are blantantly ridiculous, deserve to be ridiculed. Ridicule of the wealthy and powerful is an ancient and honorable political tool. I'm quite sure that the American revolutionaries ridiculed King George. Neither we nor anyone else can compete with the almost endless wealth that Whitman is using to pervert the political process. Ridicule makes a nice way to level the playing field a bit.

I can attest to the careful scrutiny CNA utilizes in their expenditures...alot of integrity. union bashing seems so politically popular now. I'm amazed at the lack of focus on California govt and hospital administration salaries, bonuses, etc.; seems bashing takes away the focus on Whitman's billions; association with a company that we the taxpayer's had to bailout and her zero experience with public service which she now wants to govern by buying it. Seems like twisted facts to me. gosh, no California budget yet... another billion so far that the politicians think we can afford. Aren't those folks PAID to get a budget done on time? gee...back to Arnold's leadership....and Meg to follow in the same path? OUCH.

whitman - nuance or flip-flop on issues?

monday, august 2, 2010

has california republican meg whitman, the former ebay ceo who says she'll bring a fresh approach to state government, become precisely what she insists she is not - a calculating politician who changes positions and straddles the issues depending on the audience?

some examples that have both conservatives and liberals buzzing in recent weeks:

-- whitman just spent millions on california spanish-language media to advertise her view on the nation's most controversial immigration bill: "no to the arizona law."

but on wednesday, she said in an interview with the conservative talk radio network's "america's morning news" that she would "let the arizona law stand."

She's no more ridiculous than the unions that oppose her.

I don't care what party the canditate says they belong to , I don't want somebody buying a high profile / powerful political positioin with their own money .

I am not too keen on the present situation where politicians use other peoples money either , but at least show they are able to persuade others to do so .
