Whiny surgeons and drama-queen nurses

This topic is starting to make my temper flare and making me look for other employment. I work at a SICU in a level 1 trauma center and we have a group of surgeons who seem to refuse to communicate with each other. They are all on a completely different page except when they can blame a nurse for something or complain about us "calling at night too much". The last couple dozen times they have done this, though, they've been proven at fault and still throw a fit which forces our spineless manager to enact new unit policies that make it sound like we are the ones making all the mistakes. When it comes to "calling too much", I could care less. If they're on night-call, they're on the clock just like I am and can earn their pay just like me. Maybe they should have chosen a different career. On top of that, we have a day shift full of self-proclaimed "queen bees" who look for every opportunity to throw night shift under the bus. I have kind of a bad temper, but I'm usually able to keep it in check, until recently. About a week ago while giving report to one of the day nurses (who no one wants to give report to since she is incredibly rude and condescending) I got sick of it and essentially let her have it. Since then, I've seen her a couple times but have yet to hand off patients to her and haven't heard anything about the incident (except for those who just want in on the gossip). I love this job. My nigh shift rotation is pretty awesome, but I swear I work with a bunch of high school drama queens. My knee-jerk reaction is to stand my ground and fight back, but I'm getting sick of being right, being proven right, then passive aggressively punished for it.

There are nurses that get picked on and nurses that don't. Sounds like you know the way not to get picked on.

It sounds as if you have an attitude problem. Surely every surgeon isn't whiny and all your colleagues aren't drama queens. You've ranted; I hope you feel better.

Some days, everyone you meet is a jerk. It happens to the best of us.

I feel like I used to work in your unit! I feel your pain. Especially with the whiny surgeons. Fortunately, at my current job, the physician staff are better, but there are still plenty of high and mighty nurses.

There are a lot of drama queens in ICU, in general. Critical care is legendary for strong personalities. We just lost one of our worst ones... she is picking up a clinical unit leader position somewhere else. I am happy she got promoted, and I am happy I will never have to give report to her again. It is a true win-win situation for everyone involved. Bye, Felicia.
