Hello all!!
I'm a 22 year old female who is planning to start nursing in the fall of 2009. I'm confused on what I should do...
Do I do the 24 month ADN program, an accelerated Evening ADN 18 month program, or get my BSN which will take 3 years?!?
My long term goal is to become a FNP...
Which would you do... I'm leaning toward the 18 month program because I want to start trying for kids after my first year in nursing...
However part of me is saying go ahead and get my BSN... then have kids
What would you choose in my situation?

You didnt give a whole lot of info about your situation but if you want to go the FNP route you will need the BSN. YOU have to decide what is of greater urgency, an advanced nursing degree or trying to have children.

i agree with the above poster. have you started pre-req's yet? getting into nursing programs isn't easy these days and may take a bit longer than you expected. i can tell you that having children while taking on school is difficult. if you want children urgently now, you may want to limit yourself to a couple of classes or to waiting until your children are a little older.
it's a tough call that only you can really decide for yourself.

Look into all of the programs and their wait list. Where i'm at I assuming I can score a 3.3GPA or higher, I could actually get my BSN faster than I could my ADN because of the crazy wait lists on the CC Colleges around here. That might make your decision for you!
Hello!
Sorry about that...
I'm done with all pre-reqs except micro and chemistry(for BSN). I will have atleast a 3.5 gpa by the time I apply....
I'm just ready to get in and out of nursing school... I didnt really think about waitlists and all, so I guess I'll apply to all three then make my decision later.

That was my initial plan to start with. Get my ADN and bridge over to the BSN program when I was done. Well it didn't quite work that way. I had taken all of my pre-reqs and found myself on the waiting list for the next semester and not one more class was available for me to take. So I enrolled with the 4 year university and even though it has taken more time than I had previously planned to spend doing this, I dont have one second that I regret my choice. The time FLIES! If this is something that you decide to do I don't think that you would regret it either; I would encourage anyone to get a 4 year degree, it doesn't restrict you to bedside nursing only and you are young so time is most definately on your side...I say go for the gold.
Thanks for your advice...
I have a lot of people saying I should do the BSN...
It's only 1 more year than the ADN since I have pre-reqs done.
You made a good point about how it may be hard to get accepted later done the road, that's something I haven't given much thought and is a very valid point.
Idk, decisions...decisions

OK, I have a couple of questions...
What responsibilities do you have outside of school? Do you also work? For me personally, I have to work as my DH and DD are on my benefits so anything accelerated is out of the question for me. But if school is your only responsibility and you can handle an accelerated degree, go for it!
As far a a BSN, I would say go for your ADN first, get employed as a nurse, and then have the hospital pay for it! Lots of hospitals are willing to help their employees out with education expenses. But on the flip side of that coin, see what the hospital you want to work for is looking for. I know my dream hospital prefers to hire nurses with BSN so I may need to work elsewhere first.
Good luck whatever you choose. Have you already been accepted?
I do work fulltime as of right now... My fiance is already in a ADN program at the local CC for 24 months. By the time I start in Fall 09 he will have one year left...
I have no kids, and plan on working as a CNA per diem when I actually start nursing school.
My ultimate goal is to become a NP so I want to go ahead and get my BSN so later I will just have to get my masters and certification.
I havent got accepted but pretty sure I will... atleast to one of the 3.
