Which exam should I take?

Published

Only 15 weeks to go and I complete my MSN-FNP. Which exam should I take?

Which review or prep is best?

Thanks!

I went with AANP because alternative format questions (choose all that apply) are the bane of my existence. Down-side to AANP is you need to do contact hours if you fail. Some people recommend signing up for both just for a fast turn around just in case.

I liked Holier's review.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

We were advised to take ANCC as it was supposedly more universally accepted. To date, I have never seen a job posting specify a preference for one certification over another. There were no "choose all that apply" questions on ANCC. I took it almost 9 years ago and I don't know if that's changed.

I took Fitzgerald's live review and felt it was helpful.

Hollier was the best review. I had access to Barkley, Fitzgerald, and hollier.

I took AANP. But ancc actually had a new grad coupon out back in July that cut like 125 off of the price but I still chose AANP because I don't like non clinical questions.

Definitely has changed since then. There are four types of questions: 1) multiple choice; 2) multiple response; 3) drag and drop; and 4) hot spot. Most of the test questions are multiple choice.

Glad I took it when I did!

Glad I took it when I did!

Lol seriously.

I took both AANP and ANCC and passed. To be honest with you, I found the ANCC exam easier than the AANP exam; I think this is because I was able to apply common sense to most of the theoretical concepts. As far as review courses are concerned, I took APEA review course which was in my opinion, a waste of my money as it does not prepare you for the ANCC exam at all. I also took Maria Leik review course, and also bought her NP review book, and I can tell you that Leik review is the reason why I passed both exams. There's no question on both exams that I took that I did not find the answer in Leik review course materials. In my opinion, just take the Leik review, and you will be just fine. Good luck.
