Which is better? 1199 or NYSNA

Published

Hey there, I was wandering if anyone had any opinions or advice in regards to working as an RN for a hospital supported by 1199 versus NYSNA. I know that 1199 has great medical benefits with no co-pays. But I was wandering is NYSNA is just as good in regards to medical benefits or some nurses feel it is better than 1199?

thanks for this. My wife and I are moving to NYC in about six months and she wants copies of any union contracts I can find for her. The SEIU 1199 posts theirs but NYSNA does not seem to. Do you know anywhere that their contracts are? Calls to their office have not gotten any response.

That's disheartening that NYSNA is not more helpful...I feel it's in the RNs best interests to have and share as much info as possible (which is one reason allnurses.com is such an invaluable resoure for us)---could this be because NYSNA feels their contracts are not as good as 1199's? I am attempting to post a PDF of my contract at NY Methodist hospital in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY--if this doesn't work, perhaps a nurse-techie can tell me what I'm doing wrong or I can try sending it as an e-mail attachment if you PM me your e-mail address...

my wife and I are moving to nyc in six months and she wants copies of NYSNA and SEIU 1199 contracts to get the best deal. After 3 years in the ER and 5 in the NICU she is adamant about working union only.

We found the seiu 1199 ones on line but anyone who has NYSNA contracts, or knows where they can be found, would be much appreciated!

Sure it could sound like right wing bs, especially if you're to the left of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin:trout: .But I gave my opinion, based on being a member of both, albeit at the different times. I also participated on the City-Wide negotiating commitee with 1199 back in 1994. And participated in the March on Washington,D.C. in 1995, where lots of good things were accomplished ( talk about Right Wing:uhoh3: )So I'm talking from the personal experience. What have you accomplished? How is being self-employed a "Right Wing?" I thought you liberals like the diversity, or is it only when it's a preversity?

Whoa let's save that for the O'Reilly and Limbaugh show this is not the time or place for politics or insulting other people, there is nothing communist about 1199

having been steward and contract negotiator for 1199 in western NY, I was left with the distinct impression that 1199 was mostly focused on NYC and in my person experience during negotiations they focused more on non-nursing staff (aides, laundry, housekeeping and maintenance). I was not impressed. They were doing so many contracts at one time that I felt my smaller hospital did not get the representation we deserved and shortly left the union to go to management.

I understand that this is your opinion but in my humble opinion, this is ABSOLUTELY not true.... 1199 represents Nurses just as well, if not better than any other healthcare union. Just compare contract settlements...... Although it is true that 1199 represents a larger population of non nurses, they take pride in the nurses that they do represent and they have a separate division of the union that deals with nurses and issues specific to us.

NYSNA represents over 33,000 RNs in the state of NY and is the largest state nurses association in the country.

NYSNA is a multipurpose organization speaking for all the nurses in NYS not just those they represent for collective bargaining. The contracts that NYSNA have negotiated are on line in a Members Only section. NYSNA has excellent medical and retirement benefits that their members all over the state enjoy. If you want to know what hospitals are covered by NYSNA contracts please call them at their headquarters in Latham 1-800-724-6976 or in NYC at 1-212-785- 0157.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Respectfully,

I work at 1199 and I can tell you they do too damn much for their member. The support you in damn near everything. The have a child care fund which helps with child care from birth to 17. The have training and employment funds and everything in between. The bargain hard for their members.
