Hello everyone- I am currently a RN with a BSN in New York and will be moving to Florida in a few months. This is my first time posting something and I was wondering if anyone out there can tell me anything about nursing in Florida- west coast, by Sarasota-Bradenton area. I recently got married and my husband and I love Florida, so we purchased a new home that will not be ready for a few months. Any good hospitals anyone knows about and whats the average salary down there?? Any information would be of great help, Thanks!!

You have four hospitals, Blake, Manatee, Sarasota Memorial, Doctors. Two are for profits, two are non-profits. One is a magnet hospital. Their salaries are about equal. I've been a patient in two of them and worked in two of them. As a patient and staff member, I would choose Sarasota Memorial. It is connected to the USF nursing program, has excellent physicians and excellent nurses. It is also the only magnet one :). Advise you, after you move in, to go to the county property office and file for you homestead exception, which will save you on your proerty tax. You must make Florida your primary residence, to qualify.

Just a word of warning. Your cut in pay will be painful!

Actually the best thing to do would be to get a Florida map, go to this web site

http://www.theagapecenter.com/Hospitals/Florida.htm and along with using www.mapquest.com and you address of your new home start doing some research. With the number of hospitals in the Tampa/St Pete/Sarasota area one should expect to be able to find upwards of 25-50 choices. Add in Lakeland/Orlando and the number goes up towards a 100 hospitals. It all depends on how far one wants to drive and the $$ involved and specificly where you are living. I would talk with some recruiters as finding a $5,000 or $10,000 sign on bonus shouldnt be out of line either

Yep, get used to a pay cut that might hurt your feelings. I've heard good things about Sarasota Memorial.

Good luck!

Yep, there's a price to be paid for the lovely winters here. :)

Which might not be so hard to take if the winters didn't also come with such horrendous traffic (snowbirds). :o
