Where do you see yourself in 5 Years???

In 5 years I expect to be reaping the benefits of the changing paradigm of professional nursing. Helping to shape a new professional paradigm is my work now. This work will allow me to reap significant rewards in the not so distant future. Even though I will be toward the end of my nursing career in 5 years, I still will be involved helping other nurses enact a positive, proactice, engaged nursing future. So, the answer is 5....

5 years?............hmmmmm lets see...........Probably making big bucks within the biotech field here in good ole new hampshire......of course, nursing on the side........to keep the feet wet........I love geriatrics so I will always have work in that field........

Sure hope nursing work conditions improve by then.......remember at any given moment we could be sitting in the ER or ICU needing that great experienced not overworked nurse to keep us alive.........Bless you all. OK now I am going to a different subject......it all can be overwhelming to read the negatives nursing is experiencing right now.

Ummm...which answer do you want? The reality-based one or the fantasy-based one?

Let's start with the nicer of the two...the fantasy one. In five years I see myself out of nursing and busy writing a series of wildly popular children's books. (JK Rowling eat your heart out!)

But...in reality I will probably still be a nurse and will have to content myself with writing short stories for my kids.

I'm currently a nurse executive, but I've been successful in "morphing" my position somewhat to suit my interests and strengths: concentrating on nurse education and training, being a clinical resource person, writing and publishing research, and helping to map out standards for a relatively uncharted field. If I can continue to evolve in this direction, I'll probably stay in this position for at least several years. If not, I'll probably go back for a grad degree, but am currently undecided as to whether I would go the NP or the CNS route. So either 1 or 2, I guess.

In five years? Gawd, hopefully I'll have finally become a mother and LEFT the profession to be a full-time stay at home mom!

I plan to work one 8 hour shift a week, to keep my skills up and my sanity, but that's it. No more of this 40-50 hours a week nonsense. Bleah!

Well, since I had my daughter later in life(she'll be 16), and as I am a single parent, I'll have to work to help her with college and try to build my retirement fund. I will probably go to travel nursing the day I drop her off at college. I'll do that for a few years and then my last nursing job will be with the Peace Corp...something I always wanted to do. I want to work where I could make a real difference and be appreciated for my skills.

After dealing with my current work stress and watching the CNN review of the nursing field, I would have to pick number 5. I am undecided on what I will do within the next 5 years. However, CNN predicts that because I am under 30 years old, there will be a 1 in 3 chance that I will leave nursing entirely. :confused:

nightowl -Our hospital doesn't believe us when we phone in dead anymore. Sometimes the looks on the nurses on our floor, it looks like zombieville.Off the topic track I know. Ahem. In five years I will still be overdrawn between paydays, my hemorrhoidal flare-up will be more frequent, I'll start wearing Fortrel again, phentex slippers, and still working on my medical floor, with possible inpatient stays on psych between shifts.Hope I have new underwear by then. Don't you find it's that last thing a mom ever buys for herself.If they were made out of fortrel, they'd last alot longer, hmmmm maybe I'll start a line of such underwear just for nurses. Indispensible just like us.
