Hi All,
I was talking with my friend the other day and she wanted to know; after watching that MSNBC program about the shortage of nurses why if these institutions are so worried about not having enough nurses, offering us better bebefits??? And she is right! Can someone please tell me why we don't get a great retirement package like teachers, police officers and even state and county workers??? Isn't what we all do important? You know I do love being a nurse b/c of the aspect of taking care of people but I really am thinking about a career with better benefits..all of the above careers get 70-80% of their pay and medical benefits when they retire!!! WE GET ZIP!!!NOT
TO MENTION OUR PAY FOR THE MOST PART SUCKS~ for what we are responsible for!!! Unless of course you do the weekend program(yeah you have to give up most of your weekends, great huh?? or if you've been a hosp. nurse for a zillion yrs...then maybe you'll make 25-33 an hour..PLEASE for all that experience..it's a crime!!!
I am just sick of how us nurses are treated, no wonder w/i 3 years most of the new grads are out the door esp., the ones w/ adv. degrees! I just had to vent!!! what to do huh??? Thanks for listening...i know we all have the same grip....

YOu cant compare nurses to policemen, firemen, teachers, and other public servants because they are employees of the government. Private sector jobs like nurses generally dont give the type of benefits you are talking about.
Someday, when the USA finally switches over to universal healthcare, nurses may get these benefits but ONLY if the govt takes overhealthcare totally and all healthcare workers become direct employees of the federal government.

The nurses who work in government facilities out here generally have the best benefits. The corrections system and places like UCLA offer good retirement plans. Personally, I don't trust that they'll be able to keep their promises by the time I retire, so I have never chosen a job based on benefits.
