Where to live? Working at Loyola.

Published

Hello allnurses: I am moving to chicago in a little over a month and wanted some advice on where to live. I am from the southwest and the only time I have been in Chicago was for my interview. I have tried looking online at the paper for housing ideas but feel totally lost because I don't know anything about the neighborhoods. #1 needs to be a somewhat reasonable commute to Loyola Medical Center (at night, maybe 30 min max but less is better), reasonable housing costs would be good also. A plus would be somewhere with some youngish people maybe 25-40 and a real nice area with pretty apartments/condos but not all college people bc I want to meet older people to. A dream would be something with a view of water but i think that may be crazy expensive or long drive or whatever. Does anyone have any advice of neighborhoods, specific parts of an area, or what not to look at (if you know what a nice one bedroom costs in the place you siggest even better but I can always check out the Chicago reader or trib if I need to once I can narrow it down to some places)????????????? I saw someone suggest oak park on another posting does anyone know more about that neighborhood? What others can you think of that woudl work.....................please please i need help.

Riverside/Brookfield comes to my mind first. Nice area, not too expensive, lots of older homes rehabbed into apartments, right near the zoo.

Good luck! You're making me homesick!

Oak Park!!! Look at oakparkapartments.com, 10 miles W of the Loop, blue and green line access. Plus its a nice city. I start Northwestern July 11, and Oak Park seemed the nicest place.

For all of you who live in the Chicago area..............I'm not from a big city, and usually steer clear of them for that reason. I find them too overwhelming...too huge...and learning how to drive in them stressful.

Knowing that I am this way about big cities, would you discourage me from taking a contract assignment there?

What hospital would be good to work at there?

Thanks in advance for your replies! :)

If your looking for work in the Chicago area, my personal opinion is to stay away from the downtown area. I only go if I have to. Too much traffic and too many people. If you do want to find work down there you have many options Rush, Mercy, RIC, and that's just a few. Good Luck :)

oak park is a great area....old, gorgeous apartments, etc...stay east of harlem, west of oak park ave, north of washington....can't think of a good northern border to stay south of.... within a few blocks of lake st is great, as you can walk anywhere....movie theatres, shops, etc, and are a stone's throw away from the el to get to rush, northwestern, etc...and are about 10 min, depending on roosevelt rd traffic, from loyola....

i'd very much stay away from downtown...( especially lincoln park/wrigleyville....way too much congestion, esp in the summertime with cub games...and annoying as all get out to get, especially, to loyola. n'western not quite as bad...though if you're working at rush or northwestern, greektown is a nice area... around halsted/madison...easy, again, to rush and n'western...and just off the ike (i-290) to get to loyola...

but i'm on the bandwagon, totally, for oak park- especially if you're not used to cities.

good luck!

Hi,

I worked at Loyola about 10 years ago and lived in the Westmont/Downers Grove area and thought the commute wasn't too long, however, there has been lots of growth in that area so congestion is inevitable.

My first suggestion was going to be Oak Park! I see that it has been mentioned here.

I second the Riverside Brookfield suggestion too. I lived next door in Lyons also one time and when I worked at Loyola wished I still did because that would have been about a 5-10 minute drive!!

Now, Oak Park will have you close enough to the city to get to the 'city' and yet also has its own 'village' feel.

Good luck!
