Where to live?

^^ yeah that's what I meant! You know, sharing a house with "young professionals", each paying about $1,000. I hope that's out there! I don't know how one could afford to live in D.C. otherwise!

In any case, I've seen plenty of listings on DC craigslist for this kind of thing for rooms down to $600-700, but they are summer rooms, so I'm assuming that prices will go up in August, when I leave >.

I don't think I'd like to live by myself in a brand-new city on the other side of the country where I don't know anyone...my bravery only goes so far! : )

It sounds like a good plan to me. Just make sure you screen your roommates carefully and get references. Quite an adventure! :)

I'm gonna be starting up at GEORGETOWN in August and I'm super excited. I'm also looking for SAFE and AFFORDABLE places to live, close commute to Georgetown, etc. I've heard that Alexandria, VA is a good place and I've looked at several apt buildings there. Some what freaked out about the "random" room mate situation and hope I have good luck with that.... Anyone wanna give me any suggestions on where to find affordable, safe housing that's a close commute to Georgetown (will be driving!)...thanks in advance :)

Good Luck wanting all that with a budget of 1,000. This is the Washington Metro area dear...Look on Craigslist but as far as living in Alexandria or Georgetown your budget isn't going to go a long way.

Hey y'all. I used to live in DC. When I moved there in 2001, I was able to afford a 1 BR apt near Dupont. But as time went on, I was priced further away from the center. I lived in Columbia Heights and would NOT recommend walking to WHC or Children's! I was afraid to walk to the metro. Perhaps it has gotten a lot nicer since 2002. When I was there, I saw a lot of crack deals, heard gunshots, and even witnessed a gang fight. I later moved to NE DC in an area called Brookland. I loved that area. 2 years ago, I rented a studio apt within 2 blocks of the metro for $900/mo. The Brookland metro has a shuttle to some of the hospitals. Check that out.

My friend has a condo in Columbia Heights and it'll be available for rent on August 1. She says it's 1 mile from WHC, and accessible to both green and red lines. PM me if you want more information.

There are some brand new apts going up in Wheaton - historically not a great area, however, it is changing. One of those even has an elevator directly down to the metro. A studio is 1350ish. Thats not bad for door to door commuting. Only a 16 minute ride on Metro.

You would take Route 50 to South Dakota Ave into the city from Bowie. I live in Bowie too. I love it.
