Hey guys, I am a new LVN Grad starting my first job in med/surg at my local hospital this week. I need information on malpractice insurance. I live in California. I thought information would come with my license but it did not. Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks and God Bless you all.
Baylay and TLC:
As an employer I would NEVER consider hiring a LPN or RN without them carrying their own malpractice insurance. The insurance employers provide does cover a portion of legal expenses but most employers require nurses carry their own and it is foolish not too.

When I was in school we had to show proof of malpractice insurance, along with current CPR certification. I don't remember how much it was at a student rate.
My current malpractice insurance as an LPN in Illinois was $107 for this year. It's through nso.
I'm not REQUIRED to carry malpractice insurance, and my employer has malpractice insurance, but I would not feel comfortable unless I had my own coverage. Having my own insurance means that, God forbid, someone should ever make an accusation against me, I would have an attorny to represent ME, not the company AND me.
Also, you can clain it as a deduction on your taxes. :)
