Where do you go and how many classes left?

Hi sharann, again sorry for not answering earlier, ISP problems and studying hard.

I go to Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences, and I've about 11 nursing courses to take, and 7 non-nursing co-reqs for a total of 18 more classes. I just started this semester. Our classes vary in length with some being 5 weeks (how you can squeeze a 3 semester credit course in 5 weeks is going to be interesting), and most being 8 weeks, with the chemistry being 10 weeks.

Good luck to you. Sounds like a lot when you look it like that. I'll be done in April 2007 if I go nonstop which is my goal, but I won't allow myself to burnout and will quit or sit out if that happens. :) One class at a time we'll make it.

Thanks Tweety. Sounds lke we are in similar stations in our quest for higher learning. I am amazed that over the past 5 weeks I have written 3 papers (APA style) with 2 to go over the next 2 weeks! Phew. I fear writers block!. I am enjoying the process but it is sooo difficult at times with work and family and finding time to breathe in between!

Sharann, I hear you loud and clear. While I'm happy the courses are short, because in the end those 18 classes are going to get done quicker than if I took them one class at a time, I too get overwhelmed. I just finished up week #5, with my 5th APA paper, with two more to go, and one power point presentation.

It's tough. Hang in there, one day at a time we'll make it.

I almost considered going to Jacksonville, but was turned off by the need for Chemistry and Lab. and other coreqs I lacked. I choose a school without a chemistry requirement, then changed my mind yet again to a school with a chemistry requirement, with lab as an optional extra credit (which I won't do). This way I can still go 100% online.

I am enrolled into Jacksonville University - newly enrolled. I too have an AA & ADN degree. Do you have to take so many prereq courses b/c you didn't have them or did you have some that weren't transferred over. Just curious as I am looking into all my options.

I go to University of Phoenix Online and have at least 9 more classes to go for my BSN. I may have to add on a couple of electives towards the end. I started last May, took 2 math classes, best math grades ever in the history of me! :rotfl: I also took the critical thinking course, and a sociology class on cultural diversity. After waiting 10 years for a job where I could get a schedule that would accomodate school I finally decided to get a school that would accomodate work. Each class is 5 weeks, a little rushed, but I do better/get more done with deadlines.

I also attend UoP online. I started last May. I like the classes being five weeks long and only taking one at a time. You can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am currently in the first of three math classes that I need and am finding that the five week format is a bit rushed for this. In the nursing classes we usually write a paper a week and stay very busy. Other than the three math classes, we need 9 credits of upper division electives. Because I was short two communication classes in my prereq's, taking two upper division communication courses will satisfy 6 of the 9 upper division and my general ed communication. I think I will be taking a total of 18 classes by the time I have my BSN. I have decided to double up toward the end (which will cost me way more) so I can get out by this time next year and ideally start in a MSN/FNP program summer of 2006. It should take me a month shy of two years to earn my BSN. If I didn't double up near the end, it would take me about two years and 3 months.

I just began an MSN program for Nursing Education at Walden University. The program is 24 months.

The reason I have those prereqs is that I am from California and this is a Florida school. If my AA was from FL all course would transfer. It's a way for the school to make more money in my opinion since my courses are the same. These are the hoops we must jump through though. I like the school very much for the convinience factor, and they are quite helpful in general.Good luck with your studies

Hi... can you offer any info on the clinical part of attending UOP online? I was told it was 100% online, but the course catalog mentions clinical practicums & workshops, so I'm confused. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure how Excelsior's RN to BSN works, so I can't answer that. Is the RN to BSN more "traditional?", meaning classroom style, with semesters, or is it self-paced study manuals and take a test kind of like the LPN to RN is? Personally, if I had a choice between the two I'd stick with the semester system, with an instructor, tests, etc. It might take longer, but I'm in no hurry and don't want to work very hard. :)

Is Exelsior NLN approved? That's another thing to consider, cause who knows you might want to go strait into grad school!

There's a fellow student who graduated ADN when it used to be "Regeants" so I know they accept that degree there. :)

FLorida College is one of several RN to BSN distance learning degrees offered, and I don't think one is necessarily better than the other if it's accredited and gets you the BSN.

It is all online. There are however, three practice projects. The first one I did in the NUR 402 class. It was a complete nursing assessment and care plan for a single patient, your choice, from your practice area. The other two projects I'm still a little fuzzy on, I think one is a job-shadowing, the other might be some type of community project.

Each class has a selection of readings/text material, all students have to respond to several discussion questions, classmates' replies, write individual and team papers or power point projects, and when the instructor requires write a weekly summary detailing info about the readings, and how the new info can be integrated into personal practice.

Since this is an RN to BSN program, there is no need for an observed/proctored practical exam like some other programs - you don't have to go anywhere special except to your nearest computer with internet access. :yelclap:

A co-worker is in the MSN program and they also have "clinical" projects, I believe he had to interview someone at a community center/outside clinic, but am not sure what the other program requirements are.

Hope this helps, don't forget they have all those nifty counselors just waiting to talk you into it...err, tell you about the program (yeah that's the ticket :chuckle )
