Where can Canadian NCLEX passers licensed to work in US?

Published

I thought switching to NCLEX lets Canadian nurses work everywhere in US. But recently, a colleague of mine, who passed NCLEX recently, told me they are only licensed to work in very limited States only. My colleague doesn't remember what States they can work as she wasn't planning to work in US anyway.

So I started to google where can Canadian NCLEX passers licensed to work in US and I found nothing, except a very general statement saying each State has different registration requirements.

Would anyone know what States can Canadian NCLEX passers licensed to work?

Thanks!

Derek

You can work in any state contingent on getting hired, completing the TN visa, and meeting the requirements for the states boards (and a language exam if you're from Quebec). It's the same exam...I don't see why they wouldn't let you.

Certain states like California and Florida want international nurses, so maybe that was the indicated limitation?

Well she specifically said that Canadian NCLEX can only work in limited States only, mostly far away and small States. Of course, unless she was wrong. Haha. But thanks. I mean, it doesn't really matter. Not like there are other exams we could choose to take lol

Nah, you'll be fine. The only issue I know of with the NCLEX, is it doesn't count in Canada if you took it before like 2000? I've been looking into the Massachusetts state board, and there's no stipulation regarding when/ where you took the NCLEX for registration :)

You could always contact the state you're interested in to be sure ;)

Canadian NCLEX is the same as US NCLEX. There's no difference. Even I've seen American values used on the Canadian exam. I took mine in December.

I guess at the end of the day it is up to the state once they review your application

There are Ontario licensed nurses who hold licenses in Michigan, California, Florida, Texas, New York, Arizona, North Carolina, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Georgia, Vermont, Pennsylvania (CNO Membership statistics report 2015). There are also Canadian nurses licensed in North Dakota and Washington.
