When to tell employer???

Hi all

My application for a direct commission to the Navy Nurse Corps was submitted about 2 weeks ago. Its currently being reviewed (I know this because my recruiter called and said the review committee needed some additional documentation that I had to send in). I've asked him about a timeframe but he's being very general at this time saying somewhere between october and january for ODS. Since my application is currently being reviewed, when should I tell my employer that I've applied for the Navy Nurse Corps? I know many of you have been through the process, and I just want to make sure that I go about this the correct way without making my employer think something negative. I like my job currently, just not for me and I've been here almost 6 years in very good standing. Since I don't have a concrete timeframe, what would your suggestions be on when to tell my manager? How did you all approach this?

Thanks!

I would not tell them until you have something concrete. What if something happens and you don't get your commission or it turns out to happen way, way in the future? Your employer might do like many employers do when someone gives notice, terminate your employment at their convenience. You don't want to possibly be out of work long before the Navy deal comes through.

i absolutely agree about waiting to give notice, but i'm wondering if its necessary to tell in case they receive a call for a reference, and how I would explain that haha

I commissioned already but haven't told my manager what date I'm leaving because I don't have official orders yet.. Would it be bad to give notice and leave a little after you get orders? Don't want to quit my job and not have any money cowing in if I don't get orders!!! What should I do?

Wait for the orders. You won't get orders telling you to move out the next day. There is a time frame. Work with that time frame once you know what it is.

Thanks..... I'm suppose to give a month notice but my recruiter said I'm going in august but its just around the corner and still no orders. I haven't given notice to my job yet I just tell them when I know something you'll know but right now I'm waiting!!

Wait for orders. Then also consider using all of that vacation time you were never allowed to use. You can onsie twosie days off without a cert of death. I did it until all of my leave was gone, then told the manager I was leaving. You will need to give them notice if you ever want to work there again, but they are bound by law to keep your job open for you once you get Orders for Extended Active Duty.

Yeah I was planning on using up my sick days. We get paid vacation time one we leave but not sick so whenever I give my month notice I'll just burn through my sick days while I'm gone

When you do put in your notice do not QUIT; take MILITARY LEAVE. This will hold a position with that employer for 5 years. Your employer might tell you that you have to, but you do not. As the law is written you could phone your boss up the night before you leave and verbally tell him/her that you are leaving for the military. I would advise you not to do that.

If at the 30 day mark from when you are to leave and you still do not have orders I would give your boss heads up that you might be leaving. There is a good chance that your employer already knows that you are looking at the military when your references are check.

Look up and print out the soldier & sailor civil relief act.

Wait until you have a commitment. If they call your boss you can say that you are considering the Navy. Good luck.
