When people say they are nurses but not...

Does it bother you?

The sister of my SIL is in nursing school, graduating soon (I think) but since she started taking nursing courses, the entire family- including this girl talk like she is a nurse.

It drives me insane. Yes, you are in nursing school, and this is great, but you do not have a licence to practice, you have not passed the NCLEX,you are restricted on what you can do in clinicals, and your expirience is limited to what you have seen in school. Therefore, you are not a nurse, and in fact have alot of learning to do once you do graduate. Please stop telling people and letting other tell people that you are a nurse.

IMO, being a nurse is a privledge and sometimes even an honor. Many people respect nurses of our knowledge. To let someone think that you are a nurse is deceptive.

Just curious if others feel the same way, or if I just have bigger issues on board :D

hi to all the nclex test takers! i hope and pray that you will all pass the exam. for those who are looking for a review center, i can recommend one. it's jrc ( juno review center). my cousin had her review there and she passed. she told me that it really gave her a boost of confidence when you know that you had the best and you gave your best. audio visual review really helps.. :typing

karendc21, i believe you've posted in the wrong thread. best of luck!

too much sugar, no insulin = ketoacidosis

i don't know dutchgirl i am a 47yr old juvenile diabetic and i've been a nurse for almost 20 years. i've just never seen someone go into ketoacidosis in 8-9 hours while npo. i was just curious if the patient wasn't taking her insulin even before the npo period. i'm not trying to agrue with you, i'm just amazed that a patient can go into ketoacidosis that quickly. you learn someting new every day.

what you're missing is that he was told he did not have to be npo. at the outpatient center we ship them straight to the er when they go bad. the only time we treat is when they have cardiac or respiratory arrest. he had not taken his evening or morning insulin and had eaten lots of carbs not realizing they convert to sugar. his scan wasn't until 1700 so basically 24 hours without insulin while eating carbs! he was only diagnosed less than a week ago. his doctor , a gp, is less than desirable. imho

oh ok. Sorry. Damn I must have been having a brain fart, totally missed the part where they told the patient they didn't have to be NPO.

yeah I know it says that but by what you were writing here I wasn't sure if that meant you had been taking care of a family member for years. Sorry

(Hehe) That was pretty good- hadn't occurred to me.

She should introduce herself as "Student Nurse", not nurse.

I always say, "Hi, I am X, I am going to be your student nurse for the day/evening" I think it takes the thrill out of it when you actually become an RN and can say 'I am a nurse' if you said it when you were still a student...!':chuckle (aside from the fact that you are LYING if you do not include 'student')

no, medsurg it hasn't been answered....26 years and counting is not an answer. the license information seems to be elusive

excuse me?

elusive?

because i choose not to list of my credentials?

i am not offended that we have different opinions, but i am a little taken aback by accusatory insinuations simply because we have different opinions.

Students should refer to themselves as such. It is inappropriate to do otherwise.

I don't think Dutchgirl was trying to be accusatory. It's just several people including myself have asked you if you are a Registered or Licensed practical nurse and you haven't answered the question

Sorry I diagree with you. Students should not refer to themselves as nurses until they pass the Nclex-Then they are a Nurse, not until then.

Actually we are in agreement. I said students should refer to themselves as such (meaning they need to identify themselves as students).

Wonder why it should matter whether a "nurse" is an RN or LPN? According to states with regulations re the term "nurse", either an RN or LPN can use the term.

Why should it matter on this thread?

Yes, the answer to the original question, whether I am a nurse, is: 26 years and counting.

The answer to another question is: No, I am not always proud to be a nurse. I have been feeling quite a bit of shame for the nursing field for the last few years, but that is another thread, and I have my reasons.

I have not listed my credentials as I have always preferred to keep them to myself in this forum.
