What's Your Best Nursing Ghost Story?

Nurses General Nursing Nursing Q/A

Nursing is a profession that often involves long lonely night shifts in eerie hospital wards. It's a perfect breeding ground for ghost stories. These stories often involve sightings of apparitions, strange noises, and unexplained events that are said to have taken place in hospitals, hospices, and other healthcare settings. Some of these stories are believed to be based on true events, while others are purely fictional. Regardless, they continue to captivate and intrigue both nurses and non-nurses alike - providing a spooky glimpse into the world of healthcare after dark.

I know you have seen and heard freaky things. Share your nursing ghost stories...

One time, I was working 3 to 11, and just about to do my 9pm med pass, in my LTC facility. There is NOONE down there except me and the elder people i take care of, some of them with mild dementia and some of them still 'with it'. There are cameras in the hallways, and the guard upstairs 'should' be watching them at all times. This is the basement of a huge facility that was bulit in the early 1900s. So, I was doing my 9pm med pass, and I go into the first ladies room and she said "some little girl came in and gave me a piece of candy, then she went out the window..." this lady has dementia so i didnt really take to it when she was telling me this. So i go into ALL 13 patients room, and EVERY SINGLE PATIENT is telling me about this little girl, and the candy.. right down to the pink dress and everything... I was so freaked out I tried to hide upstairs the rest of the night. Then when I was leaving the guard said he saw a little girl in a pink dress on the cameras, running down the hall with a basket on the camera, he was confused because he never saw her leave, and thought it was a daughter or granddaughter of one of the residents, even though it was 9pm and everyone was alone in their rooms.

So creepppppy.

"saw a black figure "

After reading this in a few posts. I wonder if it is the angel of death, or a soul collector for the evil? Or if being dark means evil at all? And, a white mist is not evil....?

I wonder too, why so many hang around, earth. Is not heaven waiting for all who have tried to have a good life? Especially the children....why arent they playing in heaven? Why do some have people to greet them, and some dont.

I have so many questions.

I think a book could be made and published with all these stories and more.

:)

Read Life After Death by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross...or any of her books really. She spent her whole career trying to figure out the mystery of death with her terminal patients. Very interesting books....

I just had to jump in here and say I just LOVE this thread... came across it yesterday by accident and ended having nightmares about ghosts! lol But still I'm back here today so I guess I can't pull myself away. I've had quite a few paranormal experiences in my life but not as a nurse, as I am still in school...but some of these are REALLY scary!

Keep 'em coming! *biting nails* :)

Actually I have a story that I can relate when I was studying for my Ba of Nursing.

I was doing the dishes, cleaning up you know, and had finished in the kitchen. Our kitchen and lounge are one big room basically, with an archway you walk through. Anyway I was still near the kitchen window, when I heard my Mum's broad, Scottish accented voice say VERY CLEARLY: 'Carol can you come out here and help me?' (or words to that effect). She didn't sound distressed or anything, it was just a statement. So I remember saying: 'What's wrong' sort of thing, and there was no answer. There is a door in the kitchen leading out to the back, and there is another one you access by walking through the lounge room, down the hallway and to the laundry, that goes out to the back yard. Well the outside kitchen door had heaps of recycling rubbish that had to be taken out, and as I was too lazy to move it and wondering what Mum wanted me for, I walked around through the house to the other door. Outside no-one was there. I thought: Mum must be at the side of the house. Nope, not there. Checked the whole front and back yard and the house. Nobody there. Well I went back into the lounge room, and a bit later my Mum came in having been out at the shops getting her magazines and newspapers for the day. I asked if she'd asked anyone for help and she said no. She hadn't even been OUT the back door when I heard her voice. And yet I could hear her voice SO clearly coming in through the kitchen window that day. And no-one else we know has a female Scottish voice like that - no-one else was even out there.

How weird is that? Maybe it was astral projection or something.

This isn't really a ghost story but something that happened that's a bit supernatural. I had a patient in the hospital that had a liver transplant with lots of complications but things were turning around in her favor. She had an elderly mother in her 80's and it was hard to see what this devoted mother was going through with all her daughter's complications.

I had the patient that night and made my final rounds before the next shift came out of report. This patient was doing fine, she had an NG amoung other things and everything was fine there. I went to sit at the desk and the phone rang at 11:30 pm the minute I sat down. It was the patient's mother and I thought it was very strange for her to be calling at that hour. She asked "is my daughter doing ok? I just woke up and thought I'd call. I'm sorry to bother you nurses this time of night." I had just been in the room and assured her that her daughter was doing well. However I went to check on her daughter because I had a weird hunch something was wrong. I walked in the room and saw immediately her NG bottle was full of bright red blood.

If the mother hadn't called I would not have gone in the room one more time and the next nurse might have rounded on her last since she was at the end of the hall. This patient ended up pulling through that and eventually went home in good shape.

One more..... 15 years ago my precious baby boy died at the age of 5 years old. He was severely mentally handicapped and multiple medical issues from birth. (he is the reason why I am a nurse) He passed away Oct 15th 1995 after another bout of pneumonia. Basically his neuro doc told me that the only part of his brain that was working was the brain stem, and he was on borrowed time prior to his passing. After he died, I would beg God to let me see my baby boy one more time. God never answered my prayers and begging him until 13 years later............. I had a dream that I was holding my son and were in our old house in the living room ( I used to hold my baby for hours and hours) I could feel the warmth of his skin, the softness of his hair, and his scent. This dream was so real and vivid, and I swear to you that I actually was holding my baby boy. I woke up crying and thanking God for the greatest gift. This dream was on my 40th birthday. You need to understand, that prior to that wonder experience, I had NEVER had a dream of my baby boy. Just that one time only, I havent dreamed of him since...... A few weeks after my sons funeral, I did have a dream in which my grandpa and I were walking in a field (he was a farmer) he was holding my hand and told me "Your son is safe and I am watching him and taking care of him. You dont need to worry anymore". I havent dreamed of my grandpa since either........... God is great and he answers prayers and requests, you just need a little patience sometimes.
