What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

Let's see there was Vinita (name of the town where the State Hospital was located), then there was Polaris (mom saw it on a sign), the twins named Sunny and Hunny(note the spelling), many many Heavens, Heaven Leighs, Miracle (which is usually an oxymoron), Precious Angel, and Lovely.

I have formulated a set of rules I wish we could get legislated.

#1 If the child will never be able to say or spell the name.

#2 If the child will never be able to pronounce the name.

#3 If it will get them beat up at school.

#4 If it is just plain stupid.

Then we will assign you a name for your baby.

Lochia--even worse than the Placenta (at least that is life sustaining, while it's around).....................

I once heard of a mom who named her child Nosmoking.....said it was the last thing she saw before her c/s. I also had a teen mom who named her child Margarita......(sad). I learned from many years working with new parents how to keep a straight face.

My (chemist) bro insisted he would name his children Chlorine, Florine, Bromine and Iodine. He didn't (wife may have had something to do with that)

"heavenly jewels"

My High school sweethearts mom ran a day care and took care of a little boy whos last name was Miller...his mom was pregnant and when her child was born (this was 1976) she named her new son Steven Fly Like an Eagle Miller....after Steve Millers #1 album at the time..

Had a friend in grade school named Harley Davidson. I hope he doesn't ride a honda.

When I was a student nurse, I was working Mother/Baby during a clinical rotattion. I had just taken a baby in to her Mom to be fed when the lady from the Health Dept. came in to register the birth. As one might expect, the mother and father were not married, in fact the father was a "sperm donor"- a non participant in this baby's life.

When the Health Dept. lady asked the mother for the baby's name, she said ( I SWEAR!) "I don't know how to pronounce it, but I made it up, and I have it written down." She then reached into the drawer of her bedside table and pulled out a small piece of notepaper. On it were 23 DIFFERENT LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET! The lady asked her if this was the name she wanted for her child on her birth certificate, and the mother said "yes." The lady dutifully copied the letters down.

If I hadn't seen this with my own eyes, I never would've believed it! Can you imagine the nickname the mother probably gave the child...ABC?

Miracle was mentioned in a previous post. We had a child in the ER named Remiracle. Must have been her second child. LOL

We've had several "Precious", also.

I can't think of any more right now, but those stick out! And the spellings are another thing. I don't even write the name on the crib card in our NICU until I have confirmed with MOM how they are spelling it. Dads often say--"i don't know how we'll spell it" And I have been the victim of postpartum hormones for spelling a common name the 'normal' way one time too many!

Was the teen mom Hispanic?

Margarita is the Spanish version of Margaret.

One of my old boyfriends said if he ever had a son, he wanted to name him Obediah Cain. ;)

In my finace's family:

In my family:

a few greats back grandfather: GB Basham, my grandmother spent a year trying to find out what his full name was, everything said GB....finally found out it was Green Berry (Don't know what his parents were thinking)
